Bath Abbey
Oh wow is what sprung to mind as we walked through the internal doors, beautiful beautiful beautiful! There was a wonderful array of historical tomb stones there with beautiful stained glass and an incredible ceiling. The organist was playing whilst we were walking round which made it even nicer.
Disappointing. most of the Abbey was covered up for renovations. Intimidated by the "suggested" donation required upon entry in the porch of the abbey before you can get in. Wouldn't bother going again. Nicer places in town
Brilliant, so much to see inside and out. Beautiful architecture. All for a suggested donation of £2.50
Having admired the architecture, most of our time was spent reading many of the memorials which told stories of times past. The diptychs are stunning and the work of one lady, Sue Symons. The craftsmanship is superb. Some very talented buskers were also performing in the vicinity and provided an extra dimension to the visit. Worthwhile way to spend an hour.
what a beautiful abbey this is ...the ceilings are so ornate. Really enjoyed walking around and the peaceful and calming feeling you got from the visit was amazing
Beautiful abbey!.Do one of the guided tours it's really worth it to learn about the history of the abbey. Can also do the abbey tower tour.
I booked on the last Tower Tour at 4pm on a beautiful spring day. I was the only person booked on it. The tour went ahead and lasted about 45-50 minutes. I was offered for my small ruck sack to be stored away for the tour, which was a good option as the stair cases were narrow and required some ducking through doorways as I am fairly tall. The first set of stairs is 120 and are quite narrow and winding as you'd expect, you then exit onto one of the roofs for photos before ascending the final 92 steps onto the tower itself. You also get to sit behind the clock, see the bell ringing chamber and the bells themselves. You also get to cross the Bishop's Balcony. There are lots of interesting facts and stories and the guide was happy to answer any questions and was very knowledgeable and friendly. The information provided on the tour is really interesting and was delivered with real enthusiasm and love for the place by the guide. The views from the tower are great and you can see the Thermae roof top spa pool and the roman baths as well as all across Bath. To finish the tour you climb down the tower steps and then down a different set of steps past where my bag had been stored so it could be collected and then back out into the Abbey. The tour was well organised and thought through.I really enjoyed the Tower Tour and it offered great views across Bath on a clear, crisp spring day. Combining the Tower Tour with a stroll around the Abbey itself extends the visit from 45-50 minutes to 1HR+.
If you are fortunate enough to find yourself in Bath, you must stop by the Abbey. It is a beautiful Gothic style cathedral with a wonderful history. The fan inspired vaulted ceiling is unique and beautiful. Do not forget to look down at the floor and look at the names and dates of those who proceeded you. The most memorable portion of our visit was the Tower Tour. For £6, you climb 212 steps to the roof for a birds eye view of the City and the seven hills which surround it. Before you reach he top, you visit the bell room and see the different ways the bells can be rung; you also visit the bell chamber and get to see the bells that you most likely heard prior to your entrance into the Abbey. The guide provides a great historical overview as you climb, rest and duck through low ceilings and a few narrow spaces. My daughter and I were the only ones on the tour; we definitely felt we were receiving a unique behind the scenes experience. We were even allowed to ring the bells! I do not recall the name of the individual who guided us, but he was a great host - a true gentleman, full of knowledge and kind (locked up my backpack so I did not have to take it on the climb and took our photo).
