We paid £5 each to visit the museum which included entry into the self-guided part of the museum and the guided tour around the jewellery factory. The self-guided part was interesting but the best part is getting to see the factory. Its a real time capsule, you actually get the feel that everyone just down-tooled and left! Unfortunately we didn't see any demonstrations which I think would have really added to the tour, I wish we would have been told we would not see any because we probably would have come back another day. We would recommend!!
I don't always like museums where you have to go on a tour in order to look round, but the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter is well worth a visit. The temporary exhibition space and permanent galleries are interesting and well laid out, but the real reason to come here is to look round the old Smith and Pepper jewellery factory. The guided tour was informative and ensured that we got the most out of the experience as the guide demonstrated how various tools were used and talked about the people who had worked there.
Excuse the pun but that really does sum up the museum. We paid our £4 each for admission (that's the OAP rate) and wandered round a couple of small but reasonably interesting floors while waiting for our guided tour of the old Smith & Pepper factory. And it was absolutely fascinating. As other reviews have said, the place is a time warp. The family ran it for nearly 100 years and can hardly have changed a thing in that time. Our guide explained the machinery, demonstrated how things worked and was totally fluent about her subject - she wasn't reciting a pre-learned patter, she could answer questions with ease. A great two hours spent. Interestingly when we peered through the window of a working craftsman jeweller in the Quarter he was still using an old worn wooden bench just like that at the museum. Nice to see.
It's as if the workers had just clocked off! Incredible place and a great demonstration by Rupert too. Highly recommended!
It's just like stepping back in time. The museum is a preserved factory and is just as it was left when it closed. A very informative guide, with many tales of some of the personalities who worked in the factory.Excellent visit, highly recommended.
My first job after leaving school was working in an independent jewellery shop for 12 years. I loved this job but had to move on to better myself. This was a perfect trip organised by my auntie. I had no idea what to expect but I found it very interesting and definitely worth a visit. The tour was very informative and all the machinery still works. Lovely to see everything just as they left it.
A fascinating museum which was really enhanced by our tour guide, Rupert, who was very knowledgeable, friendly and amusing. The museum is a real time capsule with interesting exhibits and shop. The cafe is good too. All the staff appeared to enjoy their work - a really good buzz!
Informative and interesting guide for our tour which lasted for one hour. We learnt so much! We were shown how jewellery was made to order and the efficient workings of the factory whilst in production. We booked in advance £5 per person entrance fee. Worth a visit!
We went on a whim with no expectations and we were pleasantly surprised! I am not usually a fan of going on tours - I prefer to go at my own pace and I can pick out the things I am interested in! I wasn't looking forward to the guided tour - but it exceeded all of my expectations! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and engaging, the tour was informative and interactive and I was genuinely gutted when it ended! I learnt a lot about jewellery production and the history of the quarter - a great visit and would highly recommend!
A great little visit and because the factory had never been emptied when it closed down it is full of artefacts
Very interesting showed you how the ink pen nibs where made and how the hand presses where used, they also have a collection of old telephones, there is plenty for the young childrento have a go at
Very interesting place. Full of history. Workshop arranged as they used to be. Give a lot of insight and sobering idea of what worklife then was. Was not that keen on going originally. Was so good, thinking of going again one day
Really interesting.make sure you go on the tour. By a fluke one of the Smith family were there on the day from New Zealand and added a little colour. It is a time capsule. Cafe good and staff very friendly.l nipped to the model shop across the road _ a rarity and treat in itself and by the time I returned my wife had bought a ring in the museum shop! Well worth the 15 minute walk from the centre.
Really enjoyable visit to a great little museum. The guided tour around the old Smith and Pepper jewellery workshop was very informative and like stepping back in time. Its amazing that it only closed in 1981. Good value for money and feels much more 'hands on' than a lot of other places.
