Had a great visit today and had a personal tour around by one of the volunteers Jan which was not expected and gave a nice personal touch and shared his own experiences. Afterwards I asked if he could possible call me a taxi as was.going to visit the Airborne museum at Oosterbeek - he said no problem and I will drive you there myself! On route we made a couple of stops and showed me some Local landmarks of the battles and glider landings. The museum has a great collection of stuff
We have visited this many times over the years and seen it grow. It humbles me and is so well presented! It is excellent value for money and truly worth a visit
We visited Arnhem principally to visit the battlefield of Market Garden. However really found out all we needed from the excellent and not to be missed facility. Particularly the basement where aspects of the battle are re-enacted. The Hartenstein Museum and the visitor centre at the John Frost Bridge are situated where very serious fighting took place. An all together experience of the futility of war
very easy to find, excellent displays and very friendly staff! eager to tell you all the local history of where everything was found and/or dug up !excellent value for money - well worth a revisit !
We have visited the museum on 3 occasions and it is one of the best presented museums we have ever been to making you really understand how heroic the battle was and what it meant to all concerned extremely moving
This is a must for anyone visiting Arnhem; this and the war cemetery. It takes you through Operation Market Garden and gives you an idea as to what the soldiers and residents went through. My grandfather was a Para and took part in the operation, so for me is was very moving. There are lots of artifacts from the time that certainly gets you thinking.Well worth a visit at the start of your trip; you'll notice more when you go around Arnhem.
I loved this museum but it brings home the reality of suburban warfare. The stories of the locals suffering before, during and after the battle for Arnhem was harrowing.
What's not to like! Had an amazing weekend, Attending 70th Anniversay of Battle of Arnhem. Enjoyed learning the History.
Well laid out some interesting facts and information about the battle at Arnhem ,from the initial landing by towed gliders and paratroopers in and around the surrounding area
tells the story of a particularly horrible part of history well and un biased Nice location in a nice little town.
If you are interested on history, and the 2nd world war this is a must. And the museum is situated in a nice palace which was the headquarters of the allies during the battle of Arhnem, surrounded by a nice green area. Really worth a visit!
This visit occurred the week of the anniversary of this costly Allied attempt to retake the bridge at Arnhem. The gratitude and reverence shown by the Dutch people to the memory and remains of the valiant men is awe inspiring. The uniforms, especially the British paratrooper berets and insignias was very emotional to me. My father served and jumped in the paratroopers but not at Arnhem. Stories he told just flooded back to me.
Very informative, plenty of exhibits, beautiful grounds. Easy to spend a good few hours here. Staff helpful - the Experience in bottom of the building good.
What a find ! We found the museum purely by chance when glancing through some leaflets in the tourist information in Arnhem. It's unlike the larger museums in the area, with no interactive displays. This is a museum that houses a great private collection of various artefacts including uniforms, guns and vehicles. If you have a real interest, then this is a great museum to visit. We spent nearly 3 hours taking in each of the exhibits with Tim our guide who was a great guy and knew his stuff!
I agree with the review by Mstone7 - the museum to see is the one just to the north of Arnehm, in the woods. It's a very extensive private collection of artefacts, with sections on occupied Holland, the battle of Arnhem and its liberation. The staff (all volunteers) are very friendly and knowledgeable. The bit about 'children of the liberation' was particularly interesting and moving. Go and enjoy this gem of a museum.
