Very big church for such a small town, looks fascinating. You can imagine how strong effect religion had centuries ago.
Also this building sets you back in time when you visit it at the Great Market, in the centre of Haarlem, NL. You will see the massive organ which Mozart has played on as well!!
The church has several unique features that are not normally seen in a structure this size. The upper tower was removed at one time and replaced with a wooden one - beautifully done and topped with a rooster weathervane. Inside you will see beautiful wooden ceilings. The most outstanding feature is the incredible organ. Magnificent in detail, I can't wait to go back in the summer and hear it.
This church is gorgeous. The architecture, the history and especially the enormous, famous organ. The church is high, light and sparsely decorated (after the Beeldenstorm in earlier centuries). In winter it can be pretty cold inside. And once I saw a small bat flying around in the church;-).
This large cathedral dominates all of Grote Markt in Haarlem. It's like several large buildings in different levels, formed together in one imposing building. Inside there's a large, fantastic organ. The windows are Beautiful, especially the modern window from 2008. Fantastic colours! The church was very cold during our visit, so if you go to a concert or sermon you need warm clothes. The entrance fee is 2,50 euro, which goes to the upkeep of the church. Well worth it! There's also a shop with friendly staff.
The oldest part of the city of Haarlem (city rights in 1245) is build on sand, unlike the moorish soil that consists most of the western Netherlands ("Holland"). There is the central plaza, the "Grote Markt" and also on the sand the old church, originally dedicated to the local patron Saint Bavo (also the patron saint of Flemish Gandt). During reformation, the church was taken over by the protestants, but most Haarlemmers still call it the Bavo. The outside was often portrayed by Dutch painters, and the high "shoulders" of the church are still seen over the other buildings, if you are outside the city on somewhat higher ground, for example a viaduct between Amsterdam and Haarlem.Don't forget to go in, if you visit Haarlem. If you are lucky, someone is playing the famous organ, on which the young Amadeus Mozart played when he visited Holland as a boy. But also when quiet, it is a wonderful experience. Look up, to the wooden roof, and around you. Seed the old choir, with special benches for high standing chuch officials. Here is a link to a little film about the Bavo, with the organ playing the famous Toccata and Fuga by J. S. Bach: http://tinyurl.com/ptjuaf6
Beautiful interior and very interesting history. They provide brochures in different languages. What caught my attention is the organ that was played by Mozart when he was 10 years old, the tomb of Frans Hal within the church and a sign within the church reminding people of the terrible time during the Spanish siege, so terrible that they had to resort to eating cats and dogs.
This formerly RomanCatholic Cathedral - with its oriins going back to the IXth Century - was consecrated in 1559 & seized only a few years later by the Protestants & turned into a "Temple".The gothic exterior suffered from "neo"-gothic" additions in the XIXth Century. The famous organ has being played by G.F. Händel, Mozart (at 10 years old) & later Mendelsohn. An extended visit in detail more than absolutely worth, as is the exterior with its little shops build around it as was the custom before the XIXth Century.
When we visited my mother and I wandered around the church with the guide and enjoyed ourselves, and were about to leave when we heard a gentleman explaining some things about the church. We stopped to listen in and ask him a question however the lovely man then took us back into the church and showed us some of the fantastic decorations and imagery within the church which we would have never noticed had he not pointed them out to us. He was brilliant and made the church so much more interesting when we knew where to look! But even without the guide it is still great to go and have a peer around this beautiful old building. The organ is quite something to see, where Mozart played as a boy, and apparently in the summer months you are able to listen to it being played which we would have loved to have heard.
Located on the Grote Markt, in the center of Haarlem, you can see the church already from far away when approaching the city. This 14th-16th century church is a landmark. It was built as a catholic church but after the Spanish revolution turned into a protestant one, which is why it looks a little bare, typical calvinistic. The huge pillars are impressive but the painted draperies are of much younger age. The floor is entirely covered with centuries old gravestones. Go and find the grave of the famous painter Frans Hals. And then there is this huge organ, once the largest in the world, and played on by Mozart. There are more interesting things. Look for the model ships and find out about the story of Damian victory. Listen to the bells, dedicated to the same legend. Seek the bone cellar. Check the bats. Look for the bread store for the poor. Admire the choir and wood carvings. And most interesting - join a tour to visit the roof of the church where you can still see the mediaval tools used to build it and the covering vaults. Also see the old fire protection materials. Climb the tower to find out that it is build completely out of wood because the earlier stone tower was too heavy, and see the lead plating to protect it. Enjoy the great view across the old city. There are regular music performances in the church. Check for the dates. Nothing more impressive than the sound of music in this grand church.
