The architecture, stained glass and silence were breathtaking. The surrounding streets are serene and lovely. If you leave your heart in Gouda, visit the webcam mounted on this cathedral for a birdseye view of the town square!
A beautiful find! Absolutely incredible detail in the windows. Huge church. Very good value for money too! A must see if in Gouda or the area.
This church is the longest in The Netherlands and has beautiful glasses. Probably the most beautiful in Western Europe.
We went to this famous church to, al last get a final tour of all the Galss in Lead windows. This one has to come and see. This is just great, including the story it tells. Forgat, you are in a nice city, and enjoy the beauty of the famous windows.
Try to combine this with a visit to the cheesemarket on Thursday morning! In China they made a replica of this building.
This Church is well worth visiting if you are in Gouda. It contains some fascinating stained glass windows - some dating back to pre-reformation days. Luckily when the Church became Protestant they decided not to destroy the windows but added to them. The depth and detail of the windows make them so much more interesting than some church windows. There is plenty of English information and it is not too expensive.
This beautiful church has some fascinating work going on at the moment. The work is being done to do some reinforcements on the structure but they have put windows into the work area so you can do some proper nosing about. There is also a slides how of some of the things they have found. The only disappointing thing about the church is that none of the displays have any English explanations on them. €4.50 well spent.
Worth a trip! Lots of renovation going on, but it was a great chance to see historic renovation in action. It has very nice restrooms inside the church. A small word of advice, bring your phone or a small flashlight with you to the restrooms. The toilets are very well lit but they are on a motion sensor system. They time out very quickly and could leave you in a slight situation in which you have to remember a few MacGyver episodes in order to escape (thankfully there is a flashlight on my iPhone).
Sint Janskerk was such an unexpected treat. I don't know how you ended up in Gouda but since you did, go here. The stained glass is just glorious as is the architecture. Best part? When we were here there was a show of the contemporary Dutch artist Willem Hesseling which was exceptional.
I had not done my homework before visiting this church in Gouda, but a fellow traveller on our trip mentioned how impressed he had been with it, so with that, I was excited to see it. If you love stained glass, this is the church to see (perhaps also the little chapel in Paris---Sainte Chapelle, which is also a historical testament to the saving of wondrous works of art in the time of extreme danger). Every window has several stories to tell, so the temptation is to overstay and mess up your next assignment, but you won't regret it. Be sure and get the full story on how these one-of-a-kind windows were saved during the threats of WWII....My hat is off again to the Dutch!!
I spent a few hours in Gouda on the way to den Bosch from den Haag. The train station did NOT have lockers for my luggage so I brought it with me to the church. The wonderful lady at the front desk kindly told me to put it in her space while I visited the church. Despite the major renovation of the choir area, the rest of the church was still impressive to visit. Very spacious and airy, with some wonderful art exhibition at that time. The area around the Janskirk is nice to walk around as well. Not far from the train station, it certainly is a nice little visit. And don't miss the cheese shops all over the town-square! After all, that's what the town is famous for! Next time I may even spend a night there just to enjoy the little town.
Very nice, we did not pay to visit but walked around and enjoyed the windows and the building are stunning.
Absolutely stunning!!! A wonderful church with unbelievably beautiful and educational stained glass windows which will entrance you forever! The windows tell their own story, but you can seek out the custodian, some book guides and devices for assistance - get the custodian to talk to you if you can - well worthg the time. During the summer season there are frequent musical concerts and many happy hours can be spent in Janskirk. The shop is full of suitable souvenirs, books, candles, glassware and memorabilia. I have been to this church four times, and will visit again if the chance arises.
The church is under renovation. The admission price of 7 Euros is too expensive. The stained glass window patterns and scenes are painted on, rather than being separate (colored) pieces.
I have been a several times to this church, and it is interesting to visit it. The church is really old and very large. The church forms the center of the old city of Gouda together with the City Hall and is a real landmark. You can visit the church for a fee to look at the remarkable windows, but you can also visit the church for free for the Sunday morning service.
