While I have visited Gouda many times over the years, this ancient town is known for its famous Gouda cheese, smoking pipes, and its 15th century city hall. It was granted City rights in 1272. Walking the old township is the best way to get around. Grote or St. Jans Kerk (Great or Saint John Church) - the longest church in The Netherlands is famous for its stained glass windows which were made between 1530 and 1603. This time around, I wanted to learn more about its Jewish history and were they lived. Its history is rich and much can be learned at the Jewish Cultural Center. The citizens of Gouda are installing memorial-stones or stumbling blocks to commemorate those who were murdered or disappeared in the Holocaust. The small copper plaques, in the pavement in front of the houses were they lived, mention the name, date of birth and place and date of death, mostly a concentration camp.
Lots of resturants and a few bars are lining the square. In the middle is the tow hall.Watch out for bicycles !
We happened to visit on Market Day. Sun was shining, stalls busy, Town Hall magnificent in the centre of the plaza...and we found some wonderful typically Dutch gluten free pastries and biscuits at De Vlaam on the square. The cheese is of course delicious. We drove from Delft, to Gouda, and then on to Kinderdijk Windmills - the perfect Dutch travelling day. Oh, and for other travelling families, there is a Lego store in the centre of town, complete with a building area for kids.
Going to the market day was the high point of the trip to Gouda, it wasn't just about the cheese but the other items was fun and good food. The town is very walkable and you can get around without a car or bike! Not to be missed
What a wonderful place, full of restaurants and bars.Get a walking map from Tourist info and follow it great.
The actual market is very much just for the locals with things like bike accessories, hosiery and fabric/wool, but I was lucky to be there for the cheese market which made for some great photos. The area the market is held is very historic and beautiful and the town itself is very walkable! Love Gouda!
Market was great but trying to get there a nightmare!Advice:Do not drive a big car as streets are very narrow and many closed off and one-way!Parking: - the first spot we found was for 1 hour parking only- the second only took 'pinpas' local card not cash or other cards- parking half over water is dangerous and scary and difficult too.- we then parked in a legal spot in yet another little street, fed meter with 7 euros then found out that this meter only took coins for the disabled spot (we were not parked in disabled spot)- frustrated we left city centre to park in a residential street where there was free parking (onder de boompjes it was called) and just walked to the market about 1 km.We then enjoyed a lovely day at the market.
We went to Gouda on Market Day and it was a great experience, the cheese market was how you expect to see it in Holland. The traders were dressed in traditional clothing and welcomed everyone to take part, it was very busy but they were happy to have photos taken. The town itself is very pleasant and all around the market square there are nice cafes and shops to spend the day at.It was a lovely experience, how I imagined Holland to be.
