The waterways in Leiden are much like they are in Amsterdam, but here there are windmills and the knowledge that the bigger waterway is not just a canal but the Rhine. Pretty and cool!
We went there to visit some friends and we were wonderfully surprised by the river and the bars and restaurants alongside. We went round to an old converted factory over the main bridge and it was one of the best places we visited in holland. Well worth it especially in the summer
Great river / canal system in Leiden. Beautiful walks with beautiful architecture to see as you pass. The Leiden Loop is a great way to see local landmarks and a Rembrant Boat trip on the canal is also to be recommended.Leiden is a lovely little city with lots to see if you are interested in its history and architecture. There are lots of good places to eat by the river / canals. We had great pancakes at Oout Leyden.
Do take your time to walk down the river, esp. if you like photographing architecture. The various features of Dutch architecture are all there, in close compact lines, in so many enduring combinations.
Numerous walking opportunities. Lovely canals. Very quiet. I would say it is more beautiful than Amsterdam because the canals are not as noisy as AMS and there is a smaller city charm to it.
This is a great little walking area. Perfect for a light meal or just people watching. Many bistros, ethnic places (donner, asian, argentinian), and even a McDonald's. Several sites on the walk including the windmill museum, the windmill you can go in, and the old city gate.Tip: The windmill museum is hard to miss -- it is a windmill raised up on top of some building. The parking lot there is handy. Park and go to the machine. Put a few euro in and press the green button for a ticket. Put the ticket on your dash. You don't have to pay for parking all the time so either pay for your stay or at least until the pay time is over.We don't go to Noordwijk without at least one quick trip to Leiden.
Leiden is one of the beautiful cities to stroll around taking in the numerous canals. There are photo opportunities around every corner especially the windmill with free entry next to the vintage white swing bridge. A busy centre but plenty of parking and worth a n approx 3 or 4 hours stop to walk around without taking in the shops!
There is no doubt Leiden on the Rhine (old and new) is a pretty town. Easily walkable as it is not very big. If you go to Visitor Centre next to Centraal Station you can pick up a map and follow a loop self guided walking trail that takes in the Rhine, some lovely windmills, Rembrandt's birthplace and the old wealthy district of Rapenburg. Well worth a few hours and the sign boards along the way have English and Dutch to explain what you are seeing.
The Rhine is Leiden and Leiden is the Rhine! Just watch this river from one of the old bridges and enjoy the environment, we did this near the Put mill and the Mors city gate.
Enjoyed the market especially the fresh fruits and vegetables. Bought a different peach that was very tasty. Cheese stands were amazing with the different flavored. Took a cruise which gave different views of city. Dragon boat races on one of the canals was exciting to see.
Leiden is a town that will make you fall in love with Holland! This town is full of quaint and picturesque streets, and there is less 'hustle' than in Amsterdam. There are many plaques in English (and other languages) right by the attraction they explain. You can be your own guide in this town! The area where the pilgrims spent some time between their life in England and America is particularly interesting! It's hard to find a parking spot, although we were lucky to ind a parkade close to the centre that was quite inexpensive. If you go to an eating place, ask for 'bitterballen', they are delicious!
Leiden is a charming little town. And Rijn is the very soul of the place. I was lucky to visit on Saturday and see the bustling open market on both sides of Rhine for myself. I would also recommend taking the hour long boat ride. It costs 10 Euros per adult with a headphone and commentary in various languages, and completely orients you to the city. It is a good starting point following which one can explore the place at one's own pace.
Treat yourself to a walk among the canals and streets of this small town. Delightful cafes, fewer tourists than Delft, great student energy, and not cluttered with souvenir stores. And if you are interested in the material culture of the past, the American Pilgrim Museum give you a chance to step inside two rooms from the late 1500s and early 1600s and feel a sense of those past times -- plus a ton of information if you're interested.
Visited to learn about the Pilgrim fathers and fell in love with the Rijn area through Leiden - missed the market but is definitely worth a trip to view the mixture of building/canal blending and views.A little late on posting this one - I thought I had last year.
