Nice area to wander around with a wide variety of restaurants in the little side streets which are full of Lisbon character. Easy way t get up is use the fernicular that goes up from Restauradores...
Looking for a party? more bars than i can count, cheap, thousands of nice ppl! The variety of bars is just astonishing
We had a great night in Bairro Alto (although not as long as it could have been as we were shattered). First stop was a little bar with cocktails for a very modest 5euros each and where the owner was very happy to chat to us at the bar and offer some tips on visiting Lisbon. We then went for a lovely meal in a quirky little restaurant that was very reasonably priced. Expect lots of bars and restaurants about as big as a good sized family lounge and an authentic Portuguese experience. The area is quite steep (so ladies beware of wearing your high heels) and although there is a funicular, we thought it was quite expensive at a around 3 euros each for a very short ride.
Having lived in Lisbon in the past, we were looking forward to a stroll in the Bairro Alto. But we felt that the area has gone downhill a lot: it looked unkempt and unloved, with lots of graffiti disfiguring the buildings and even Amalia Rodriques' great Fado house "O Forcado". So sad.
For the nights out hopping from a bar to another. Good vibes and lots of people around inside and out of the bars
This was THE place to go to for a Friday night out on town in Lisbon. We reached there about 11pm and the party was just getting started. Alcohol is quite reasonably priced here, there are loads of interesting bars that you can hop into, and as the night progresses, the music gets better and the dance floors get packed. We left early in the morning after a great night of partying.
Everyone goes here to take a selfie/panorama. I recommend you grab your selfie stick and do the same.
To be honest a few people had said it was a place you have to visit but I was not impressed. We visited an "Irish Bar" run by a guy in a wig with no top on who was clearly not "Irish". They sold British Ciders and beers but somehow thought sticking a few nostalgic Irish logos, signs or memorabilia about made it into an Irish Bar... we left after 1 drink! We continued onto a small Jazz Bar which we enjoyed, it was busy so we had to wait a few minutes for a seat but enjoyed the atmosphere and cocktails. We then went onto a small disco bar which again we enjoyed. Now for the down side... there are a lot of (we were told) gypsies in the area who offer you drugs as you walk up the street. They make you feel extremely uncomfortable. At one stage as my partner had gone to the bar and I was in view of the window 4 of them gathered and stared in at me making nose signals indicating did I want drugs, I tried to ignore them and turned slightly but I felt extremely nervous then and wanted to just get out of the area as quickly as possible. If the police were more present the area may be somewhere I’d recommend as it is quirky and different but after my personal experience I wouldn’t go back...
I stayed in Bairro Alto. This is the best neighborhood and the reason I feel in love with Lisbon. The tiled buildings are so unique, the lookout is breathtaking, but the night life is the best part. The bars open their doors to the public and people crowd the streets to drink and mingle. It was the best time I've had going out in all of Europe!
We really liked the Barrio Alto area for bars and restaurants, we were out late on Friday and Saturday nights and felt perfectly safe. We did get offered dope a couple of times, but it was never more than an enquiry and made me smile rather than be offended.Be warned though girls, do wear your "flatties" if you are walking far because of the cobbles and the hills
There are so many bars, cafes and restaurants to visit in this district it is hard to know where to start. Some look a bit unprepossessing but can turn out to be great; others look trendy enticing but can disappoint. Take your pick - it's fun finding ones you like.
It has to be seen, Walked, Shopped and enjoyed at your own pace.... Early morning or late evening is Magical...
Took a trip up the Gloriana tram and then to Sao Roque Church and museum - beautiful. the views from the park beside the tram exit provides a wonderful vista over the City. Bairro Alto is old narrow and twisty and is interesting to see. In all a pleasant way to spend a morning.
Very old and interesting area to walk around. Fill with locals and tourists and lots of little shops, bars and restaurants. You can either reach by a tram or walk up steep hill to reach here.
This area has lots of bars and restaurants to chose from it seems never ending. As you walk around you have people promoting their establishments handing out flyers and cards. Lots of the bars have live music which we found excellent, many of the bars display their prices outside on menu board which we found pleasing also we found the prices so reasonable. As we went in February the area was pretty quiet but we were told in high season the place is buzzing . Some of the bars allow customers to smoke. Its well worth a visit.
