The cathedral forms part of the defensive wall of the town. Following the audioguide tour requires a bit of hunting around, but it is a fine place with magnificent details
This Cathedral is elegant and you almost feel that you are living in the time when it was built. They make you pay to get in which is a bit unusual but since it feels like being in a museum I guess it´s all right.
We took an all-day bus tour from Madrid (I think it cost $75 Euro each) to visit both Avila and Segovia. The tour included lunch and admissions to the Cathedral and the fort at Segovia. Upon entering the Cathedral there is a small ornate chapel in a very small room left of the altar, where Saint Teresa and nuns worshipped. Very interesting history. The Pope was to visit the Cathedral in 2014. I wish we had more time to visit inside the walls of Avila.
Anyone you decides to visit Avila in the first place will have seen in any guide book that this is the most important site in the city ialonwith the walled surroundings.
Fabulous cathedral - billed as the oldest Gothic church in Spain. In addition to the wonderful interior, there are numerous rooms housing artifacts and treasures, particularly silverware - well worth exploring. It's a great visit and a real treat.
This cathedral overwhelms the small square it stands in and is included in the city wall. There is a small fee to get inside, but it is a lovely place in a lovely city..
It is hard to say enough about the cathedrals in Spain. Some many different ones, all spectacular in their own unique way. Avila is worth a visit
This cathedral does not look like anything special from the outside, but it is much bigger and impressive on the inside. Built over centuries it combines different styles and very interesting.
It seems such a shame that they charge to go into a church. I have no problem in making a donation. We decided not to pay to go in as the cathedral appeared to be void of pews etc. and that the viewing area was very limited.
But after going in and seeing so much beautiful architecture, altars, relics, it was well worth it. The altars made of gold, the intricate carvings, the religious paintings and the sacristy are all awe inspiring.
Going to this cathedral was truly an eye-opener. The history was fascinating, particularly learning about Saint Teresa and how the Saints were dismembered and given to different cathedrals. The cathedral is beautiful and in a wonderful part of Avila.
Really these cathedrals should be on everyone's list. It is peak into a time that was calmer, full of faith and strength in each person. The church is slowly trying to rennovate the areas and the cathedral is a nice delight to visit.
Visited this using the family tourist ticket available from the tourist office opposite this church. €29 for a family with 4 kids under 12 - well worth the money as we got into all the tourist attractions in Avila.Kids had had enough by the time we visited here (spent whole day in Avila) so didn't spend much time in here. But what we saw was worth the visit.
And, I found it very helpful. Travelling from Madrid Airport to Avila was, as I had been assured, easy by Avanzabus; I made bookings to Segovia, Salamanca & Madrid by internet before we left - and it all worked out very well - & puntually. The Cathedral in Avila was not so impressive, for me - but, then, I was on the trail of Teresa of Avila, as the Convento del Encarnacion - which was a wonderful, small but authentic relic of this mystic; however, not the easiest place to find. If you find the San Vincente & the Information point nearby, you will be going in the right direction. The Hotel Dos Castillos was an excellent Hotel to stay in - especially once we had worked out how to access the town on the local bus.
The audioguide for this visit is comprehensive. I enjoyed it in January although my son and his girlfriend gave up on it this August. They were impressed by the coloured stonework on the inside. I am always drawn back to the hermaphrodite wodwos flanking the main door: look at what they are standing on and see if you agree wiith me how rude it is!
