Walked down to see the stunningly set Ermita de San Frutos. The church is set on a promontory, in the midst of gorgeous and stunning scenery. Not overly demanding walking, either. Kites and other birds of prey fly overhead. Not to be missed.
Historical Ermita de San Frutas perched on a promontory of the Hoces De Duraton. Buitre Leonardos (Griffin Vultures) nesting in the rocky river cliffs & soaring overhead. David Attenborough there weeks before filming those very same birds.
Stunning scenery, gorge views.... looks like a mini Grand Canyon! Amazing vultures flying overhead.GO EARLY!! No one else was there when we visited at about 9.30! Easy walk, but parents need to keep an eye on their children. There are big dropsaway from the path! Easy parking, with an excellent map and information board. An attraction to be on the top of the list if you visit this part of Spain.
Great walks above the Gorges but even better seeing them from a kayak. We joined a small group with Hoces del Duraton SL who organise trips from the village of Sebulcor. Try and locate them on Google Earth before going as we didn't see any signs in Sebulcor to help us to locate them! The trip itself was excellent, though birders might find that other kayakers made too much noise!!
A visit to this area is a must. It is a miniature Grand Canyon with amazing views in every direction.
We spent an incredible June morning walking down to the Hermitage of Saint Fructus in the Duratón River Canyons National Park. Breathtaking is not a big enough word to describe how astounding this corner of the park (which, in its entirety is fabulous, along the riverbed) is. As you leave the parking lot and follow the dusty trail, you will come over a rise and then gasp as you look down on the snaking canyons of the Duratón River and the ancient hermitage of Saint Fructus out on one of the cliffs... The stories surrounding the Saint and his siblings are worth reading about before you begin as they give some lovely historical context to the site.
The canyons are impressive, they appear as having been misplaced in this otherwise quite monotonous landscape. Especially the region around the little romanesque church of San Frutos and the ruins of the old franciscan monastery are worth visiting. The nearby city of Sepulveda h a lot of bars and restaurants and som interesting historic buildings.
Dont miss this place when in region! The walk from the parking is shot and it is part of the enjoyment, because you are already in fact there and can enjoy the views and nature. The parking is free, there are orientaton tables in the nearby villages so you will not get lost. Keep driving on the cobble road until you reach the final parking place. No facilities as to buying snacks or bathroom - luckily, because then it would be as busy as Disneyland. There are eagles and others flying around you. You may hear the sheeps´bells across the water. The views are astonishing, the water may have really spectacular colours. Do not mis this and Speulveda, when around.
