A brilliant strong fortress and ancient cathedral complex sitting atop a hill which also affords long distance views towards Andorra and the snow-capped summits of the Pyrénées. I'd recommend you take your time to savour this place.
Must see if you are visiting the town. You can see the hill and the cathedral from a long distance when you are in Lleida by road. However, it is much more beautiful if you go and visit the cathedral, the Sufa Castle or if you have a drink at the cafe in front of the cathedral. The cloister is definitely one of the most impressive religious sites in Lleida.
Being from this city, last spring we decided to take our granddaughter to visit it. The truth is, she didn't show any interest in strolling around the cloister but her eyes brightened when we proposed her to have a try and ascend the sixscore and so steps up the tower. She, being three, demanded some help to complete the climbing so I took her up but once we reached the top, she pestered me to leave her on the ground to scrutinize the view. It is wonderful if you catch a clear day and you know where to look at. The sight is gorgeous and is worth the climbing up the narrowing staircase. We lingered for a while as I was taking multiple pictures of all sorroundings and my granddaughter was keeping on asking me questions about many a building. After a good twenty minutes, it was time to climb down. There are two little hindrances, though. As the staircase is really narrow near the top, it only permits the pass of one person at a time and if you have the bad luck that there are some visitors going up, you have to wait until everybody has reached the top. The other drawback is that there are some bells on one side of the tower and they chime every quarter and every hour. Since we are from Lleida, we knew that the worst hour to go up or down is at twelve because the big, big, big bell strikes twelve times and I assure you that not everybody's hearing can stand it as you pass next to the bell. Once you have finished this visit, you can walk around the rest of the cathedral and enjoy its wonderful construction. There's an information desk with brochures in different languages and all in all I really recommend a visit to this gem of our city, Lleida
A "must" if you're visiting Lleida. Don't miss to visit the cloister of the cathedral. Visita obligada si vienes de visita a Lleida. No te olvides de visitar el cláustro de la catedral.
One of the most impressive cathedrals in Catalunya. More impressive than Barcelona's gothic cathedral.
The escalator & tower lift are not for the faint hearted! That having been said it did mean one was less out of puff for the visit. Having multilingual plaques for each point of interest was a bonus. The cloister was bigger than the ones we know well in Cahors & Moissac and the reconstruction work blends in well but one has to wonder at the skills of the original masons who did the work without modern equipment. The audio-visual presentation backed by Faure's Requiem was also worth watching as was the similar film in the King's Palace. The views from the hill make you realise why it was chosen.
Magnificient Romanesque to Gothic architecture transition. Awesome views from the top of the clock tower. One of the best Gothic cloisters in Europe. It's worth it! Not to be missed!
We stayed in the town centre and it was a very pleasant experience, from Plaça de Sant Joan there is a large escalator and a tower lift that takes you to Seu Valle. At the top of the tower is an observation platform worthy of a minute or two taking in the views. It is all that others have said and more, it simply has to be seen.
Seu Vella is definitely worth the visit, unfortunately this can't be said of the rest of the town. We went there on a Sunday afternoon in August, and after the visit of Seu Vella we decided to walk down towards the city. The streets were dirty, and this is what we remarked, not meant racist in any way, there were hundreds of black people standing there, and we were offered to buy drugs from them 4 times within the first minutes we were walking there. We did not find this a pleasant experience at all so we decided to leave this town asap and move on to the next.
We were in the way between the Pyrenees to Barcelona and stopped at the way at Turo Seu Valle, we didn’t regret ! It was great, the position of the place above the city, the tower, the nice garden the great cathedral and also the great service of the people selling the tickets, it was great !
And I mean that title both literally and figuratively. Located on the highest hill in Lleida, this cathedral has a commanding view of the city and the countryside beyond. Of course, the best view is from the belltower; at 238 steps up an increasingly narrow spiral staircase, the belltower is the highest point in Lleida. It was a warm day when I climbed to the top, but the small windows and larger doors for the bells provided a welcome cooling breeze. And the thick stone walls provided insulation from the heat of the day. The cathedral itself is magnificent in its scale. I never cease to be amazed at the skill required to construct these buildings in the 13th century. I found the cloisters to be a wonderful place to relax after the climb to the top of the belltower; there is plenty of seating on the stone benches and the columns and intricate carvings between them held my interest for as long as I wanted to rest. If you're in Leida, this is the top site to visit. It's not necessary to walk the hill to get there. It's easy enough to drive right up to the entrance to the complex.
It is on top of a hill that overlooks the city, and you can climb up the tower to get great views of the city, but it is a fair hike! The cathedral also has a nice garden, and a museum. 5 Euros to get in, or 4 for students (including international). It's also next to the kings castle, which costs extra to get into.
Unfortunately, when we were there, the tower was not open but still had to pay full entry fee! However, Cathedral and Cloisters good and views over city fantastic.A must if you have the time.
Went to a conference this week in Lleida and the youth orchestra played a concert here. It was fabulous. The setting is amazing so if you have the chance to pass through Lleida and see it, then you should.
Lleida (Lerida) is a remarkably unattractive town, having borne the brunt of wars and depradations over the centuries, but the town is crowned by the magnificent and unmissable Seu Vella, a cathedral-fortress that has seen many owners over the ages. There are signs from the town centre which will enable you to drive right up to the entrance (large free parking area), or you can walk if you are fit, or take a strange lift to one side of the complex - but driving there is easy.7€ is the current cost of the combined ticket, but the Casa del Rey is only one room which has little in it, so if you are feeling economical you can pay 4€ for the cathedral, cloisters and bell tower. Although there is plenty of concrete about, the town has done a great job at piecing back together what was once a historical marvel. The church is vast, the cloisters stunning, the tower exhausting to climb, and the views from everywhere outstanding (except that there is little to see of interest!).Don't miss the back side of the church, where there are two splendid porticos (also a bar with terrace and more views), and on the first Tuesday of each month entry is free. There is plenty of information to be had, and, unusually for Spain, notices are in English too.
