There are lots of possibilities for bird watching in the area around the Donana National Park although it can be quite difficult to get good information about where to go and what is where. There are organised tours from El Acebuche and El Rocio into the parts of the park which do not have public access and we made several attempts to join one of these tours but the staff seemed unable to tell us when there would be a tour in English. However, you can visit many worthwhile places on your own. Both the visitors centres of El Acebuche and El Acebron have paths and hides and El Rocio has many possibiliites. A drive from Aznalcazar via Dehesa de Abajo and onto Jose Valverde visitors centre is a good trip. Dehesa de Abajo has the largest nesting colony of white storks in Europe and is especially interesting in the spring when the birds are nesting. Between there and Jose Valverde are large areas of wetland where numerous bird species can be seen although Jose Valverde itself is not that interesting so consider turning round before you get there.
The park is full of wildlife such as wild boar, deer, and birds galore. Take your binoculars and enjoy!
A visit in the national parc with jeep, sounds beautiful right? Think again! After calling several times to get a reservation, with an english guide. We drove there from Seville to get our visit. Without any warning we were put on a bus with a spanish guide, because there was no english one present that day. (That was something they new days before and didn't mention on the phone) So we payed 30 euros each, to not understand a word. The bus was late & needed to pick up passengers at a hotel, we had to be there 30 minutes in advance, after the pick up we had already lost 30 minutes of the safari that's supposed to be 4 hours, but actually is 3 and a half maybe. We learned after our first stop there was one huide who spoke some english, but he was bound bye the contract not to speak any??? And they didn't wanna put us on that bus.. After the tour we went to the office yo make an official complaint. They couldn't accomadate us and even saying sorry for your inconveinience was hard! Overall waist of time and money!
I can imagine that Doñana is beautiful when it is wet. There are plenty of boardwalks and bird hides, but little to see at the end of summer.
We were lured into a guided tour without anybody mentioning beforehand that the tour would not be given with English translation. Not when reserving the tour, not when paying the tour at the local visitor centre in Acebuche and not at the start of the bus drive. The driver never stopped, barely slowed down for photographs of the wildlife and seemed intent on getting back to base asap and before the other two 4WD coaches. He made no attempt at dialogue with the other nationalities on board, only speaking and telling in Spanish. While he did appear to speak English when I confronted him with the fact that nobody warned us that no translation would be given. He responded in English. So is was not a question of being able to translate but more not willing to translate!! In the end we had to follow the tour by the summier English booklet but there appeared to be told much more.
The tour was run by the Cooperativa Andaluza Marismas del Rocio (http://www.donanavisitas.es/) and took us through all the ecosystems in the park. A bit bumpy in places but our first stop was in the middle of the sand dunes - an almost alien landscape. Fascinating animal tracks in the sand..still trying to work out what made them.Next stop was by the river - one word of advice. There were LOTS of hungry mosquitos so be prepared!Unfortunately our guide only spoke Spanish so we missed what sounded like a great running commentary on the trip.We saw red deer, fallow deer and even wild boar on the beach. We all enjoyed the trip immensely, despite the mosquito bites! There is also a good café on site where we had some good cafés con leche. Afterwards take the time to visit Rocio - one of the most surreal towns I've ever seen. The streets are covered in sand and the whole place looks like a set for a spaghetti western.
My group did a horseback riding tour through the park and down to the beach. The workers were professional and we enjoyed talking with them as well as horsing around ... heh, get it? Horsing around? :)Anyway, I would definitely recommend this tour even for people who are inexperienced. It's very important not to be skittish because horses pick up on that and get skittish themselves, but if you're able to be calm and just enjoy the ride, I can promise that you will!! Go in the late afternoon/evening for sunset views and cooler weather!
The tour (3.5-4h) was very enjoyable & interesting. Our guide was Gonzalo who did it in Spanish & very good English. He was very knowledgeable and had a good sense of humour. We saw lots of animals: deer and game with fawns, wild boar with piglets, wild horses and foals, as well as wild cows apart from many types of birds. There were also several wild boar on the beach at low tide, looking for food, which we didn't expect. Please note that it is a bit of a bumpy ride in the dunes.
Of our 7 day holiday around Seville we spent 2 days in the park. This is a magnificent area for bird watching, heard so much about it prior to going and it certainly lived up to its reputation. Our bird count numbered over 80 species and several that we could not ID. Even if your a none birder a visit is worthwhile as there is so much to see in a variety of settings. Great information centres and great coffee and food. Did not see the Lynx but what the heck, we had a great time. If in the area don't miss out--just go.
The chance of seeing Iberian lynx is slim. I was unlucky but met 2 ladies who had seen one ...just the luck of the draw. You have to go on an escorted tour but the tour driver and leader were knowledgeable about flora fauna and birds.. A very good information centre where we were able to buy a drink and eat our picnics at tables whilst viewing birds on a lagoon directly outside.
Birds birds birds but also peaceful good walking ( heavily restricted access to park but don't let that put you off, still worthwhile and you can walk the beach foreshore as far as you like. Don't fake a membership of a brotherhood to be able to walk through the park there are some realky protected species and habitats and the scale these pilgramages is immense, damaging and not particularly spirutual) Take the tour by 4 wheel drive bus not particularly "green" but protects the site and earns to suppirt it. Spanish imperial eagle nesting there when we visited, think we spotted it.
As one of the most important European natural reserves it is a must to visit. You can choose between different tour operators.
