do not miss Ubeda although its a bit out of the regular Abdalucian trip. the city itself worth the visit and the synagogue which was accidently found and exlored the rich Jewish life in Ubeda.the Manager Andrea Pezzini runs a local tour and info agency called Artificis and guides the tour of the synagogue from the bottom of his heart. i , as a Jew was totally touched and emotioned in this place. takes you hundreds years ago to your brothers who lives there.
Dont míss this place !! We were 50 persons from Sweden !We had a fantastic guide . The place is amazing - but why do they have smokesticks like Hindu temples ... Was strange and felt wrong !!!
This place is amazing. It is an important part of Spanish history and even more, the history of the world. Neither of us were Jewish but we all felt very moved by the history. Plus, the building itself was amazing and very unique--like nothing we have seen before. Bravo to the developer for preserving this important piece of history. My partner left crying at the impact of it all.
I could write so much about this, especially after living in Ubeda for 5 years. And yes, it is beautiful and an amazing find, but I have my doubts about the reconstruction. Also, the fact that is is basically used as storage for the owner and his personal collection of stuff that doesn't have anything to do with the synagogue is annoying since it should be about the history of judaism in the area. But, what really irks me are the guides. The difference between the English and Spanish guides, plus, the difference of information they give is ridiculous. I have been there between 5-10 times because every time a visitor came I would take them. I got a guide who spoke English once and is was embarrassing the information he gave...which was near to nothing. Then I have gone and they give you a paper in English that also gives no information. So I started asking for a specific guide who I knew spoke English and knew what he was talking about and they were always obviously offended and said he was busy. Now, if you get a Spanish guide you learn a ton about the structure which is awesome. They also had a Torah just lying about open, my roommate at the time who is Jewish told them that is not how you treat the Torah and people could be offended, as she was. They just said if they wanted her opinion they would ask her. Well, I brought another Jewish friend and she was also offended. I guess enough people said something that now they have it behind glass. So, since my review sounds negative you probably ask why did I go so many times? Well, it is an amazing structure and the Mikveh is spectacular especially for the summer solstice...I 100% RECOMMEND going for that even though they did some really un P.C. things with the water. I just wish they would think more globally, especially since Ubeda has opened up so much in recent years to tourism, and learn more about what they have and how to treat and present it properly.
The story of this discovery was amazing the director is so welcoming well informed it was a pleasure to visit well worth jumping off the highway to find
A truely incredible historical find. Easily missed because on the outside there is no way to guess the importance of this site.
Hidden gem located under an existing building. Tours are only in Spanish however an English language booklet was provided covering the tour.
As another review says it would have been even more enjoyable if we had been able to understand more of the detailed description. But definitely worth seeing.
The ancient synagogue in the heart of Ubeda should not be missed. To visit one has to join one of the frequent tours in Spanish. The guides are clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about this place. We were provided some written explanation in English but I would have liked to have known a lot more.
I visited the Sinagoga del Agua a few weeks ago with my teenage son. Very enthusiastic and accommodating staff - my son arrived on time for the last tour of the evening, I was a little late because of something I had to sort out at the hotel. No problem. They graciously opened the door and let me in to join his tour late. Not a breath of inconvenience or annoyance. I was impressed. The Sinagogue itself is a wonderful, secret place. You're led further and further down towards the ritual bath at the heart of the building - the mikveh - which is filled by a natural spring. A magical place. It's all been brought back to life beautifully. The tour guides - if ours was anything to go by - clearly love their work. Our tour was in Spanish. We were handed written English information too, in case we wanted to check a detail in our own language. That was thoughtful. They do tours in English too - you just have to look at their timetable to find them.If I was going to give a word of advice to a visitor - if you can, get to the synagogue a bit before your visit and have a quick scan through the guide to see if there's anything in particular that you want pointed out or explained to you. We read the guide after our tour and, not knowing quite what a mezuzah was, wanted to see it. Our guide hadn't pointed it out - but another member of staff took us to it. Graciously. Our own guide's interests seem to lie more with the hidden nature of the synagogue as a whole, the way it was hidden inside an ordinary house before it was discovered in 2006, the wells and the ritual bathing experience of the mikveh. They don't have time to talk about everything - there's so much to see there. But they'll happily talk about anything in the synagogue, if you let them know what you want. It would repay more than one visit if you have time in Úbeda.
It is an old synagogue apparently lost for hundreds of years before being "rediscovered" only a few years ago. It is amazing and very interesting. In looking around it you will not only learn about its history and be guided around its contents but also learn something of the Jewish religion. Small entrance fee. Don't miss it.
The Sinagoga del Agua is one of the most incredible places I have visited. The story of its discovery, relatively recently, adds to its mystery and atmosphere. Visitors to Ubeda should definitely not miss it. I had not expected anything as impressive. I was fortunate to have a wonderful guide from ArtificiS who explained to me the process of the discovery and the fascinating history of the place.
This miraculous discovery is a wonder of the world - profoundly moving and a total revelation . Hidden for a 1000 years you can walk into the past of the Jewish Golden Age.
I was lucky enough to have a night-time tour of this incredible space, followed by a performance of Sephardic music. This was one of the highlights of my months in Spain, and brought a new perspective to the history of Spain. Information in Spain often focuses heavily on Christian monuments, however in my opinion this small place of worship - buried for hundreds of years - was more interesting and moving than the cathedrals of Úbeda. The staff who have worked so hard on the Singagoga del Agua have also established the Palacio de Los Olvidados in Granada, which is also worth a visit to discover more about the largely-forgotten Jewish history of Andalucía.
A must to see place in Ubeda. The story about how they discovered this hidden synagogue is very interesting.I am not an expert about synagogues but I think this place was it. Listen to the important explanations (very interesting) of the guide and ask her all your questions. They allowed us to take pictures. I don’t know if there are English speaking guides.I liked so much the Mikveh. There is some spirituality in this place.
