we really enjoyed visiting the Vitoria walls, although of course you cannot compare them with other walls in other towns/cities around the country. However, I really appreciated seeing that the city makes an effort to restore them, and show you the beautiful history of the place. The physical walls are not that impressive in comparison to others, but I found very interesting all the history that the guides explained. Around the walls, in the old part of the city, there are so many other things to visit and beautiful historic places, and everywhere is full of amazing bars and restaurants with delicious food and drinks. So the visit itself was overall very worth it for all of us.
Not impressed, oversold and trying to hard. I couldn't stop thinking that I'd be furious if I was one of the neighbours with a freaking tourist strip where there should be my garden. Just ok, not the best thing in Vitoria by far..
We had an enjoyable time visiting the walls. They're not as impressive as other walls in Spain, such as Lugo or Avila, but they are worth a trip to see. The main section worth looking at has a walkway around the outside and you can see some excavations of various sections, with some very nice gardens and one of the city murals there too. To be honest, we couldn't be bothered with a guided tour, as the various interpretative boards are useful enough. You can walk through an old city gate and see the full height of the walls and the various sections that were formed over the years. Most of the walls are hidden by houses, so it is a limited sight. Worth dropping by as you walk around the old town.
The city walls are worth a visit. There's some good bits and some not so good bits. It's easily walkable from the centre of town.
We had originally decided to go to the sea, but as the weather wasn't so good, we decided to go to this city instead, and boy, were we glad we did!We didn't know what to expect, so it was such a surprise to find such a pretty place, with all the buildings on different levels (there's quite a bit of climbing!), lots of churches to visit and the city walls to walk around.Unfortunately we didn't know that the Cathedral can only be visited with a guided tour. When we arrived, the tour in English had just left, and the next one was in 1 hour's time, in Spanish, so if you go, check times before. The Basque influence is much more visible here, so please try to find time to visit it if you are in the area.Much better than Bilbao!
Lovely city to walk around all the city is worth a visit. We stayed 3 Nights and was well worth all of the 4 days we travelled the area.
Here and there they have preserved the walls by removing the houses that historically attttached themselves to the wall as the city grew. You can view the salt vats and the old slaughterhouse area
We happened across the park along the old city wall and were quite impressed with the display and history. Vitoria is a beautiful city and every park, street, and display we saw were well done.I visited the city on business and it was so nice I brought my wife on the next visit. Lots to see and do, inexpensive and the people are very friendly. If you like to stroll, wine and dine this is a very nice city to experience.
The city walls can be seen at Calle Fray Zacarias Martinez, 3. Beside the city wall is the Escoriaza-Esquivel Palace. There is a gate at this part of the wall and one can go down the hill at this point.
Great place to learn about the history of Vitoria. The choice of listening to the recording in English made us smile....broad Scottish accent - or you could choose castellano or Basque! Everything also in Braille and wheelchair access no problem! The town even has pavement escalators to help you up the many hills!
Overall rating: average. Why? Nice city center, devided into 2 parts: the newer part (shop till you drop, ladies!!!) and the old part. The newer part mostly consists of shops as El Corte Inglés and other smaller shops. The historic city center is cosy to visit, a part of it is the way to Santiago de Compostella.Must have seens: Plaza de España (with the tourist information office as well) and Plaza de la Virgen Blanca (better known as Plaza Vieja). There's a lot of blablabla about the Cathedral of Santa Maria, but I think it is not worth it. They ask 10 euro's to visit the cathedral, in case you want to go inside.Nice to stroll when the weather is good, to have a drink on the terrace on a hot summer evening :)But when the weather is bad one look at the city and you want to go home a.s.a.p. :(
Restoration of this area has been done in a very intelligent way, allowing the visit to this area and combining it with gardens and other devices, such as an ancient... fridge!
