I am so glad that I did this. There was a wonderful explanation of the culture and history of the area.
Currently, the museum is hosting a exhibition on Japanese Gardens. A guest went and loved it. You are able to walk through the gardens with special shoe coverings and see the art. Also, a great place to learn more about the history of Pais Vasco. If you are hungry, there is a lovely cafe in the museum.
A wonderful afternoon with the audio tour to accompany the spanish and basque info everywhere. Learned so much about the region, it's history and its art. The sert canvasses were mind blowing. Loved it.
As a Basque scholar who has both lived in and traveled around the Basque regions of Spain and Portugal, I believe no visit to that area of northern Spain should pass without visiting the very informative museum. See it.
We really enjoyed this place because it is set out over different time periods on each floor. The setting is beautiful and we came away with a better understanding of the Basque people, history and way of life. They have a fantastic film of men dancing back in the late 1800's which is hilarious and should definitely be seen. We were truly over museums by the end of our travels in Spain but this one was a highlight and truly enjoyable. Highly recommend!
You can see both t Sert's wonderful paintings depicting scenes of Basque character and history and also the museum with exhibitions of Basque history and culture.
This museum is highly recommended because it gives a rather complete view of Basque life and history, from art to crafts to sporting events. The museum is in a quiet corner of the city near the Parte Vieja and is within walking distance of many hotels.
A converted monastery that is now a museum presenting items and narration from various historical eras of the Basque nation. It also houses a small collection of paintings, from various eras. It can be a very relaxing and educational visit.
Great use of an old monastery building. the new addition is fab too. Great collection and special exhibits. Bigger than it looks. Wonderful staff at desk. When we arrived late one day they strongly suggested in the nicest way that we should come back when we had more time. We took the advice and are very glad we did. Nice cafe too. Worth twice the cost. Senior discount. Only complaint is that the sections on Basque History could use some English explanations. It looked Fascinating. Plan 2-3 hours minimum.
This museum was very interesting. We went on a Tuesday (which was free) and wished we had had more time to spend there. You could easily spend two or more hours looking around. There was a lot of variety in the way the exhibits were set out and it is a beautiful space.
Enjoyable visit to this lovely old building which provided a good overview of Basque history, culture and lifestyle. Very pleasant and helpful man at the reception desk. Audio guide in English was useful and the film show showing the changes in a farming family's life was interesting also how life for Basque women has changed and improved. If you have a couple of hour to spare make a visit which enhances a visit to San Sebastián.
The museum is beautiful (and free on Tuesdays). The collection is varied and has something to interest anyone. There is an interpretive handset to help at various points throughout the museum. The convent cloister is gorgeous.
If you've got a "main town" with only one museum dedicated to Basque lifestyles, history, and culture, it's going to be a bit difficult to curate everything that's happened in the past two thousand years. This museum seems a bit "all over the place" because there's a lot to be said. When you try to do a little something for everyone, you end up with a lot that just isn't that interesting. If you're bored, really want a run-down on Basque culture (including industrial culture), you could go here...or you could read a few Wikipedia entries and get a much better sense of continuity of the language, culture, and history than the museum presents. It is a very pretty building.
A great way to spend an hour or two learning more about local history. Unless you speak spanish or basque, you should use one of their excellent audio guides. There is a film shown in the church at the start of the tour round the museum but it seems to get shown only on the hour, so if you arrive as it's ending, as we did, there's no obvious moment to return to see it. Therefore aim to arrive 10-15 mins before the hour so you see it in the logical sequence. This is a well designed, thoughtful, contemporary museum with lots to interest everybody.
Lovely way to spend a few hours soaking in Basque history. Lovely new museum. Great outdoor cafe. Good audio guide.
