This little zoo located in Athens, GA was by no means spectacularly large or amazing but for a zoo in a small college town, it was pretty good. I went to this zoo while waiting for a different event. I think that if you live near, are on the way or waiting for something else, this free zoo is a good place to stop by. There are a few animals including the main attraction, bears. It was pretty interesting but would not be worth a long dive.
This is a very small place. There are animals, birds, and reptiles. My wife and I have been several times, and we really enjoy going. Sometimes it's more fun to see the positive reactions of children to their surroundings at the zoo than us going there for our own enjoyment.
An amazing zoo full of great animals. Best of all it is free! They even have an exercise yard where they let the snakes have a little supervised freedom. Definitely worth the drive and time!
This is more of a nature rehabilitation center than a zoo. You'll find some one eyed owls, orphaned bear cubs, rescued crocodiles, and more. There is a paved winding path between the animal enclosures and it's nice to walk. Plaques explain all about the animals. There are scheduled activities for kids and volunteers are welcome, for both teaching and animal care. There is a place to get some food there that I did not personally try, but I hear it's good. There's also a pond with quarter-machines for duck food and some walking trails nearby. It's a good place for a picnic or a walk.
Bear Hollow is a simple, laid back place to visit. Plan to spend an hour or two here and bring a pic nic lunch!! Kids will love it. Sweet Romantic place for couples. I like to go there alone to meander, think and de stress. It closes around dark so summer gives you plenty of time to stay a while.
I have enjoyed visiting Bear Hollow ever since my Freshman year at UGA, 1996. The zoo is free and features native GA animals. The park has plenty of picnic tables and a great playground area which my niece enjoys visiting. Bear Hollow is really a gem! The lake has a paved path around it which is great for walking.
What a DARLING little park. Nice and clean, whimsically laid out with animal exhibits for the kids with really nice educational tidbits on each species. Very interesting. Our kids loved it! Plus, the staff is clearly passionate about what they do. We asked Clint (the lead zoologist in the office) about a skull our little son had found and instead of telling him what type of animal it belonged to he brought him into the closed office, showed him a variety of skulls and had him guess! It was a FANTASTIC education and he did it with a smile and enthusiasm! Moreover, the park is wonderful. You can feed the ducks (special food so bring your quarters), there is a playground, and it is a WONDERFUL place to picnic. If you don't feel like packing food, Cali N Titos is super close-by and you can go there afterwards or get the food to go for your picnic. Cali's is an epic spot to eat. CRAZY awesome food...our 5 kids LOVE IT!
My son went with his summer camp and enjoyed all the animals. He liked the nature hike and the animal photo shots. He went on about the hissing hissing cockroaches, the bald eagles (his favorite), the special bugs under the logs they got to turn over. He got to see his favorite type of bear - the black bear. There were three of then with a tree house. All in all he thoroughly enjoyed himself.
This isn't a very large Zoo, but a very good place learn about Georgia nature. The area is kid friendly and never really crowded. The zoo is free.
We had a few minutes to kill before brunch and stopped by this zoo - its free and small, and very walkable for all ages. Except for a few bumps a stroller would be fine. The signs and activities cater to the youngsters. All of the animals are easy to see (eagle, bears, mountain cats, owls, deer, etc.) There's also a hiking trail around or near the zoo. We went the beginning of November and all the animals were still out and active. Plenty of parking; beautiful hilly setting.
What a beautiful spot for a small zoo. You reach it by winding through wooded roads that seem to be off the beaten path. The zoo is home to native species and you can see them up close. Everything is so natural but easy to get to. The volunteer staff is wonderful. They are so knowledgeable. They can even describe each animals personality and are genuine animal lovers. The zoo is free but I would encourage everyone to make a generous donation. It is more than worth it.
I love this place, very friendly workers, you can also volunteer, please make sure you donate, great place to bring my daughter, i do it every time i get a chance, this is our getaway place.
Great option for a free hour to spend with the little ones in a shady, park-like atmosphere, where you see different critters in a very compact, walk-able space. It's small, but the people that run it on a volunteer basis make up for the size by providing many programs and educational opps throughout the year. Make a small donation to support their efforts.
This is a small zoo in Athens that my girlfriend and I visited while in town. I would highly recommend going. The animals just look so happy and the staff is very friendly!! And I forgot to mention the best part, ITS FREE!
This was a small zoo/exhibit that I will never forget. For starters, it was free to go to this park. It is very clean and the animals are well taken care of. When you enter the zoo, be sure to get a self guided tour sheet from the box on the right. It gives details on who donated the animal, their names, and if they have any type of injury etc...It also gives other educational information such as what they eat etc....I never knew that their were so many types of Owls that lived in the area. They have such a mean look up close. They also have 2 bald eagles that are not even enclosed because they can not fly. They had to make a play area for them to walk in freely because they will never be able to fly again. The 3 bears are adorable. The male is enormous. This was a great time that you can spend alone, with kids or even with another adult. I highly recommend Bear Hollow Zoo. It is open M-F from 9-5 and some Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4.
