Even if this type of art is not your thing, this is a gorgeous museum and is a must see before or after lunch in downtown Cartersville. By the time you're through this museum, you will fully appreciate the art as well.
We saw this museum on Georgia Traveler and wanted to go next time we were in Atlanta visiting family. You wouldn't expect this out in the middle of nowhere in the South, but there it was! We could have spent more time there, but had to head back to Savannah. It was one of the best museums I have been to in a long time and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Lots of surprises tucked in here as well. We would go back for sure.
This museum is an oasis in Cartersville, just outside of Atlanta. I did not know what to expect from a western art museum, but was delightfully pleased. This is a museum that primarily focuses on art depicting the American West. The museum is three floors but most of the exhibits are on the entry level and the second floor. The art ranges from classic to modern paintings and bronze to paper sculptures. There is a gallery dedicated to Presidential photographs, and one dedicated to letters from/to all past presidents. The ground floor (below the entry level) has an educational space for kids (I did not go in). I am not an art person per se, but I really enjoyed the museum. The paintings were grand, vivid, and pertinent to the era. The sculptures had amazing detail that I found fascinating. However, I confess I spent the most time looking at presidential photographs. They were candid pictures of our recent presidents, taken by the presidential photographers. Some of these photographs have hit popular media, but, I really enjoyed them. It seems a bit out of place relative to the theme of the museum, but it was a worthwhile experience; I am glad they have this gallery. The other gallery that was interesting was the presidential letters. I believe they had hand-written or typed letters from all the past presidents on a variety of topics. It was intriguing. One quibble I have is that the museum is next to train tracks that are quite busy and there is no way to avoid the loud train rumbling by and blowing its whistle. It can be distracting. We also ate a quick lunch at the museum cafe, which was good. I wouldn't go there just to eat at the cafe, but, if you are there and hungry, it is definitely a nice option. Another fine touch for the museum is that they have a coat room with free lockers to put your stuff in. Overall, great museum. I agree with other reviewers that this museum would have been an excellent addition to any major city in the US. Cartersville must be proud to house such a fine museum!
It is a lot better than you would expect, especially in a small town.Cartersville is a nice small town and close to Atlanta and only 1 1/2hr from Chattanooga.
nice art, large quiet venue. very informative displays. plenty of parking at the side of the building.
On the advice of a friend who is a professional artist my husband and I stopped at the Booth on our way to Atlanta. I thought my husband would enjoy it and I would be a good sport, but I was the one swooning and saying, "I love this place!" seconds after we walked through the door. We arrived at 1 p.m., ate lunch at the cafe ($3.25 for a loaded hot dog I had to eat with a knife and fork), then went on a tour led by docent Pete (excellent), watched the orientation film (beautiful), and explored the Presidential Hall. The notable facts about each president were interesting. Then we went into each gallery, pointing out our favorite pieces. One painting I especially liked was Tom Gilleon's "Northern Plains." I liked learning how bronze statues are made and seeing the different types of art.The children's area was precious. I wished I could be a child long enough to do all the activities. Other pluses: super nice museum staff, unique elevators, a lovely gift shop, and free parking. We stayed six hours moving through the museum at a good clip. We agreed that one could sit in front of some of the paintings for an hour and still not appreciate all the details. If we lived closer we'd definitely be members.
Loved the presidents section and the civil war paintings, could have spent several more hours in both area's, i will return.
Some really nice pieces of painting, sculpture and artifacts. A few that I didn't consider art but a great way to spend a rainy morning. Beautiful building.
What a nice collection of western art. Absolutely loved all of the sculptures. The building itself is very well done. Plenty of benches throughout to sit and take a break. The presentation and lighting is also first class. All of this for only ten dollars. Will definitely make more visits to this place.
This museum is of the highest quality and a real surprise considering it is up I-75, about an hour's quick drive from Atlanta. Globally recognized artists focusing on the Western United States, from the early days of exploration to more modern moments can be found. In particular, the "old west" permeates the atmosphere including not only artwork but relics from that era and attitude - a stage coach is a good example of what a visitor can find. The museum itself is physically modern and almost seems an extension of the High Museum of Atlanta- even in design and execution. As a bonus, Cartersville has a number of restaurants that are a delight to visit with a wide variety of offerings. If you want to make a day of it, go up early, see the Booth Museum and then spend the afternoon at the Science Museum just a short distance away - another excellent stop.
My 10-year old daughter has been to this museum a couple of times with her classmates at school, so my husband and I wanted to check it out too. It was only $20 for my husband and I to get a ticket and the children were free! We love American Indian and Civil War history and they have three large floors to explore, so it took about three hours to see everything. Absolutely amazing artwork and sculptures! They also have a neat area downstairs for the children to explore and interact, as well western and cowboy artifacts. I have asthma, so the elevators were very helpful, but they do have stairs as well. Guided tours are available, but we chose to look around on our own. They also have a Presidential section that's very interesting. My daughter and granddaughter wanted to visit the gift shop too, so I bought a nice horse figurine and a neat handmade bar of soap with a horse on it. I definitely recommend and will go back soon when it's just me and my husband so that we can take more time to observe everything without children pushing us along.
This western art museum has it all! Fabulous sculpture, paintings, photos, wagon trains, special exhibits etc. we joined because you cannot take it all in with one visit. My fave? White paper sculpture scenes scattered throughout. Simply fascinating! Also the kids have an area downstairs to play cowboy. Go!
We love taking "newbies" to this world-class museum. Always enough changes to remain high interest for repeat visitors.
I have always had an affinity for Western art and the " cowboy life". So this was a great find. Located a few miles north of Atlanta in a very scenic small southern town. This was a " fill in" until my son finished work. Boy was this a find! I thought I would be there a an hour or so. Ended up over 2.5 hours. Even spending that amount of time, I have to go back, just to finish all the Art and information available at this spot. As I was leaving, with my mind overwhelmed with all I had seen, I know that I would have to return. I did not feel as though I had completed my trip. Need to go back to absorb more. You just can't believe how much there is to feast your eyes.
Awesome place to see unique art works, even ones from local artists. Staff is friendly and makes visit even more worthwhile. Great place to visit!!
