We camped at this little park for labor day weekend. Loved the location and the scenery that is located here. The park is small and the camping spaces are close together and not private but we didn't let that get in the way of a great weekend in the Georgia mountains. Across the street and a short hike is hemlock falls and it's absolutely beautiful! Even on this holiday weekend we were out there all alone with nature. We ate lunch here almost everyday and made smores. One thing to keep in mind is cell service is slim to none at least for us on sprint, we had no service even for GPS to get places. We had to resort to the good old map lol but that was perfectly fine with us. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Nothing but great things about this park.
Make reservations in advance. Very nice park. Large parking areas for campers. Very safe for kids. Have church on Sunday. Always have for free natural walks or go to the fish farm. Bird watching walks. FUN
We visited Mocassin Creek Park in late October, 2014 for the hike to the falls only, we did not visit the lake or camping grounds although you must drive through the campground to reach the trail head. Of the 28 falls we visited during our trip to northern GA and SW NC this was the easiest hike vs the greatest reward. The path is wide and very flat, there is a slight climb at the end to reach Hemlock Falls, otherwise it almost 100% flat. It also follows the river to the falls so the sound of water and smaller falls tripping over the rocks is constant. The hike is 1.1 miles one way to Hemlock, we did not take the somewhat more strenuous hike to the final fall another .6 miles up stream. One of the smaller falls along the way runs over a series of flat rocks and you can walk right into the river with very little effort. This is a great place for enjoying the falls, being very close to the water, taking photos or having lunch. Hemlock falls is a wide 15 ft fall falling into a large pond and is easily and comfortable viewed. For those wanting a very easy hike to see several falls along the way will really enjoy this hike.
First, the "state park" is limited to the campground on the lake. Seriously. No trails, no acreage, ... just the campground. And what's weird is there are NO lakeside campsites. Much of the campground is pretty packed, especially the center section where there isn't much privacy at all. With all of that said, it is still an excellent location. There are plenty of places to sit along the water's edge and watch the day go by, it's 30 minutes to beautiful Clarksville, 30 minutes to Hiawasee, and dozens of other small mountain towns. And the mountain roads in this part of Georgia are a motorcyclists and convertible owner's dream as they twist and wind through the lower Appalachians.
We went to see what this consisted of and looks like a great place to camp! The lake was so pretty and the park would be great for couples and families!!
On the shores of Lake Burton, this is a beautiful, small, well kept campground. The fishing was non existent, both on the lake and in the creek, but it was still a relaxing weekend, and we will return.
Like all Georgia State Parks we've visited (& we've visited most) - it's beautiful, well-kept and well-run. Wonderful place for families or just a great place to escape.
This was a different day out and the trip to the falls was worth the effort of getting there. We parked the car along a rugged track about half a mile from the road and on exiting the car it was difficult to see at first where the path lay. We found it and ambled along a root filled pathway at times boggy and water filled and somewhat overgrown in places. The terrain was undulating and about half way to the main falls we crossed a small rigid wooden bridge which looked quite new. The path then climbed up and the main falls came into sight although we believe that there may have been more further on. We were quite weary by this time and decided it was time to return to the car. For younger more ambitious explorers it would be great to spend a couple more hours exploring the next few hills and bends although by now the path was becoming more rugged and overgrown. Had we not already been to Tallulah Falls the day before then we might have had the energy to press on further. It was a great experience to be out in the wilds and we only saw a couple of other tourist all the time we were there. This spot belonged to us.
Our second stop on our July 4th adventure was Moccasin Creek State Park. If you're wanting to hike to Hemlock Falls be sure to get a map from the visitor center across the street. Lots of fish in the creek and Lake Burton. The lake is so blue! Follow the maps and get as close the falls as possible. You can even get to the top of the falls for excellent views to boot.
I have camped here about 15 years ago and this past spring I took my son camping for the first time here. We had a great time. Very nice camp sites with power and water...and the bathrooms and showers are close by. Everyone there was very friendly. My son made many new friends and so did I. Very quite at night even with the road close by.
Had read all the other reviews about great trout fishing...so we came. Yes they have a nice little stream but fishing is just for under 11year old kids and over 65 adults :( any other ages can fish from a boat dock into a lake. Disappointing!! The drive was nice and curvy. And kids playground by the water was an ok spot to relax for a minute.
This is a great little park, located along the banks of Moccassin Creek (we had site #2, creekside) and Lake Burton. A little "close" between sites due to small size of park but the beauty makes up for it. Sites are first come, first served so get there early so you can get near the creek. I highly recommend you make the drive up Wildcat Creek Road and see the many falls and rapids of Wildcat Creek. The road is narrow and somewhat rutted so beware with a car, should be no problem for SUV or trucks.ENJOY!
My hubby and I took our 3 boys camping and trout fishing for the weekend. The park is adjacent to the hatchery and fishing is excellent. The stream is well stocked and all of our boys caught fish. Camp is clean and very family friendly. They have a great playground and lots of swings. We took both of our dogs and that was a joy also. We will be back. Highly recommend.
My wife and I were looking to get away to see the No Georgia fall colors, and luckily enough, got one night at Moccasin Creek Park. First chance to visit this park, and probably not one high on our list to return to. Overall, the park is very nice, but you had better really like your neighbors for this campground. Each site is tightly spaced so there's no reprieve from neighbors' dogs, 32 inch TV on ALL weekend, even when the family was sitting with their backs to their camper, and don't get me started with the 4 high powered awning lights that gave a nice glow on the inside of our trailer. Overall, I would give this park a average to good rating because of its staff (thank you, Ms. Pearce for your hospitality) several camp hosts we encountered, and the bath facilities were the cleanest I have ever experienced. But frankly, the design of the park felt more like tailgating at a college football game. And, I don't care for tailgating.
2-Mile Hemlock Falls Trail is on outstanding trail to hike summer or Fall as it is cool and shaded along it's entire length as it follows the river to Hemlock Falls. There, an awesome pool awaits for summer time cooling off at the base of the falls. Many little smaller falls all along the length of the trail, as well as side rivulets also fall from the hills and rock faces all along the trial so, bring good water resistant hiking boots! Stunning Fall foliage here, so bring your camera for awesome shots! Many opportunities for great pics along the way.
