I thoroughly enjoyed talking to the gentleman museum supervisor on this day. He provided lots of info. about Oliver Hardy (a Harlem, GA native). It turned out to be a fun visit. The museum is full of diverse memorabilia. Go see for yourself! You won't be sorry.
It sucks. We went to the museum, the city, and the festival. All 3 sucked. They are all overpriced, overrated, and none if which are family oriented. There is just way too much alcohol, and a lack of parking. You wouldn't expect people to be rude at this event, but they very much were.
Our grands , who knew nothing about this comedic team , are now great fans. After seeing clips of their physical humor they got DVD 's and really love them. The 4 adults in our group enjoyed the exhibits and talking with the volunteers . They only have donation box and it is well worth a donation to keep it open.
We had no idea that just off Interstate 20 East was the birthplace of Oliver Hardy and a little museum of photos, memorabilia, and L & H things for sale. There is a cut out of a full sized car with full sized Laurel and Hardy that provide a great photo op. Hilarious! Brought back a ton of memories of early Saturday mornings and lots of laughs. Well worth the 20 minute detour.
Laughing with tears - that's what I remember when watching Stanley and Ollie. I wish people would get to see more of their sketches and movies. They brightened our childhood in a sometimes very sad and very 'grey' Eastern Europe in the 70-ties and 80-ties.So glad we stopped to visit the museum - plenty of memorabilia, posters, pictures, dolls. I could have stayed there for hours...
The folks here are wonderful. Our classic car group had a wonderful time and laughed so much at a showing of "The Music Box". Very glad we stopped here.
This is a very small building in the town of Harlem, GA - the birth place of Oliver Hardy. Hardy moved from Harlem at 10 months old and eventually ended up in Milledgeville, GA at the age of 10. The proprietors of the museum are very knowledgeable of Hardy’s life and they have the memorabilia to prove it! There is an interesting collection of photographs through the years and several collectors have donated their collection to the museum or have it on loan to them. While there is no fee for the museum, donations are welcome. Worth the visit as you are coming in to Augusta, GA from the west, take the short detour to Harlem, GA and visit the museum. While you are there, ask about Ollie Also & Stanie Too Fine Mess Old Car Museum. This is also a must see and accepts donations for admission. Both are worth the detour!
Harlem, Georgia is Oliver Hardy's home town, and the Laurel and Hardy Museum does him (and Stan Laurel) proud. What does it cost to get in? Not a penny! You can make a donation if you want, but that's up to you.The museum has all sorts of memorabilia from the boys' time together, and you can have your picture taken seated in the museum's car. Laurel and Hardy movies are always being played in the cozy theater.
This museum is not large in size, but it is a large museum when it comes to information. Gary Russeth was a wealth of information about Laurel and Hardy you could tell that he has a passion &love for this comedy team, just listening to Gary share such wonderful information was a pleasure. Mr. Russeth is also a wonderful prop builder, doll house and puppets too! Gary has his own little museum of life size cars that he built from wood and repurposed items. They are all so beautiful and you can not tell that they are made of wood/repurposed items until you look real close. Even the car engines with the spark plugs and engine blocks are amazing. After seeing the Laurel and Hardy museum make sure you go to Gary and Jean Russeth museum you will be amazed and glad you did. The Laurel and Hardy movies in the back are also a real treat too. Free admission, but donations are accepted. I gladly gave a donation in support of such a wonderful place with so much to learn and enjoy. Jean and Gary Russeth are very gracious people.
Nice little place. The people are more than happy to share what they know about the team. They show some of their slap stick movies. Lots of pictures and memrobilia Get you picture taken in the car with Stan & Oliver. Stop next door at Lucky Lady Pecan's. Was worth the stop, only ask for a donation. Length of visit is up to you.
Museum is in Harlem Ga on 250 n Louisville St. Visited museum and was really surprised. It was a small but great. Harlem is the birthplace of Oliver Hardy. The owners were a very pleasant husband/wife team and walked with you explaining the items in the museum. There is also a small gift shop with several items for sale. The museum is free and donation excepted.Contact: www.laurelandhardymuseum.com for more information and how to get to the museum. They also have another museum of cars dating back to the early 19 hundreds and made of wood that the owners has made. They are about 15 different cars. It takes about 2 years to handcraft each cars. They look like a real car.Again, it was a great place to visit.
great little museum and great help from staff, great little museum around the corner one of the staff has with wooden cars and all kinds of other cool stuff
Cute little museum! Free admission, and you can watch Laurel & Hardy movies in the back. Knowledgeable people who are behind the counter.
My husband and I stopped at the museum while on a ramble in Georgia. It was packed with all sorts of memorabilia relating to Laurel and Hardy. The docent was wonderful - such an interesting person with stories to tell. He was so welcoming and kind. Also, we visited his personal museum - the Fine Mess Museum where we saw some incredible cars made of wood - cars which were full-size. Just unbelievable. Take time to see both if you're in Harlem.
A friend on I stopped here on our way to the Georgia Guide Stones and this museum (which is free!) was a great find! It's only one room of memorabilia with some fun photo opportunities. There was even a chance for some unique photo opportunities and a chance to watch some movies/shorts. A great way to break up a long trip!
