a very interesting place to visit, host was knowledgeable, friendly and courteous...even though there was upstairs rooms, it was kind of small(moving to a larger building across from the sports hall, where the festival was held in a yr) family and i enjoyed it
The Senior members from my Stone Mountain, GA church thoroughly enjoyed the museum, especially the knowledgeable guide. It was easy to understand the relevance of the displays and the importance of Ms. Tubman's sacrifices and well-deserved place in America's history. This type of exhibit makes you think and does not just readily hand everything to the visitors. As always, you learn so much information that was left out of the American history books. Our senior members are part of the last generation to personally remember their grandparents sharing that time in history with them. Great time also in the gift shop!!
Last I heard the ambitious exploits of the former mayor were largely bankrupt and had left the city in the same condition. Several museums, opened near this location, at the cost of bulldozers and who knows what. Now they closed because no one really wanted to pay the price of admission of nothingness. Most of these now are empty shells littering the cityscape of the city of Macon. Tubman had nothing whatsoever to do with Macon and a museum in her honor, while might be worthy, isn't worth the tax payers money here to divert money from needed road repairs, housing and other social services that is fostered upon the town. I believe that because of the ambitious and selfish appointed leaders, that it's now closed.
LOTS of history, the kind every human should know about regardless of race. School field trips are PERFECT. Very clean & in a great location. Also great to add to activities for your family reunion. There are also other places to see within the vicinity.
Quaint museum. Learned of GA artists that I had not known before. Very nice staff. It's like a hodge podge of African American history under one roof.
After visiting some of the other museums of similar theme in other southern cities, I was very disappointed by this one. It follows the typical story line, but the displays are small and well worn.
This is an excellent place to learn about black history. They have some really beautiful art work. Very enjoyable to take your time and walk through at your own pace.
The rooms just go on & on - there is much more here than you might think when you first enter. We took our 9 yr old son here & we were captivated & moved by what we saw. Through historical artifacts & mini-biographies, we learned about slavery & the abolitionists, the Civil Rights movement, & inventions by African Americans. There is also an extensive collection of fine art & folk art. SO interesting & moving. A must-see in Macon.
I was so glad that my church took me to this museum because I learned more from the tour guider, Mr. Todd, than historical books. Books don't break it down into a form that I can quite understand. Therefore with Mr. Todd I could ask as many question as I wanted with an answer that I could understand.
I felt that the Museum should have been more informative on Harriet Tubman since that is what catches everyones attention "THE NAME" - "HARRIET TUBMAN" The Museum was based on black art, old black movies from the 70's and a muriel of Black History.. This is not at all what I imagined it to be!
Very nice. I am sure it will be much better when they move in the new building around the corner.
