I am a regular visitor, not only is it a historic cemetery but a great place to walk. It is part of the Occmulgee Heritage Trail. In October the hold a Spirits Walk bringing inhabitants to life so they can share that life with us for a brief moment in time assuring them they will never be forgotten. A Macon favorite.
Throughly enjoy walking around in an old cemetery. The history is awesome. Some very beautiful grave markers. Would love to do the Walk with the Spirits in the fall that they do, i heard it was a popular tour.
Definitely worth walking through this historic landmark. The architecture is amazing as well as the views of the river.
A beautiful hillside cemetery overlooking the Ocmulgee River with important graves of local citizens. Some of the epitaphs are great, such as, "Been here, gone, but had a good time." If you are looking for "the place"; well, this is it!
Someone told us about this tour and we went on a whim. What a treat. Cemetery is historic and has a great collection of infamous people from our local community that are buried there. We went on a guided tour complete with actors scattered throughout the cemetery. They really gave you a sense of being back in time when the people they were portraying lived. We left there with a totally new appreciation of our local history. Tour ends in a mausoleum complete with beer and wine. A great weekend activity.
My friend and I went on the Spirit of Riverside Tour last evening. The tour lasted about an hour ending with wine or hot cider and light snacks in the Mausoleum. Not a Scary venue but Historical. Volunteer Actors dress in period costume and tell a short tale of persons buried there and other local Cemeteries. We found it very informative and entertaining. Riverside Cemetery holds these "Walks" several times a year as does Rosehill. Rosehill is having a Rumble or Ramble not sure of correct name Sunday 10/26 @ 2:00. Check the Internet for exact time/date since I may be wrong..The proceeds benefit the upkeep of these Historic Macon landmarks. All the guides & Actors are Volunteers.
We are strange people who like to walk around in cemeteries. This one is absolutely beautiful. It is hilly and historical, and a visitor can feel a sense of solemnity and mystery. A person can visit the various sections, such as the Jewish section; very interesting. The old gravestones are fascinating. We love this place!
While not quite as historic as Rose Hill cemetery, Riverside is nice, with some beautiful monuments.
One of my favorite places in Macon! I helped lead a tour for a fifth grade class from Alexander II. The kids were very interested in exploring the symbols and years on the tombstones. It's so much more than a graveyard! History and nature truly live here. The landscaping was designed by Calvert Vaux - landscape architect of Central Park in NY. I enjoy observing birds and flowers on peaceful walks along the new section of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail. This place provides creative history events. Their theatrical history tours are incredible. Talented costumed "spirits" will perform graveside - bringing to life notable Macon individuals. I'm excited to be attending Spring Spirit Stroll during the Cherry Blossom Festival.
The cemetery makes a wonderful walk. Although It is a "garden cemetery" and is kept beautifully, all of its historic charm is intact.
Far from being a morbid graveyard, today Riverside Cemetery (Macon, Ga.) is a treasured cemetery and park for the community -- a valued green space in Central Georgia. The Riverside Cemetery Conservancy hosts a wide range of lively events not usually associated with final resting sites, such as amphitheater picnics and jazz concerts, which are respectfully presented. History comes to life at Riverside's beautifully landscaped 125 acre cultural landmark, established in 1887 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In October and during Macon's annual March Cherry Blossom Festival, there's a fascinating portrayal of some of the Maconites who're buried there. On "Spirit Stroll" (guided walking tours) costumed actors bring to life the stories of Maconites who're part of the city's colorful past. All are welcome to walk, jog or drive through the historic site with its rolling hills, beautiful monuments and plantings. If you'd just like to stroll the peaceful and well landscaped pathways, stop by the office during office hours for a self-guided tour map with 89 numbered sites. Group tours can be booked year-round. More history is revealed at the final resting places for more than 18,000 people who represent many ages, faiths and races. Celebrities and rank and file citizens, rich and poor, soldier and civilian -- all share a common Riverside Residency. Many Confederate as well as Union Civil War casualties are interred there. Combining many missions, Riverside Cemetery is "a revered cemetery and vibrant park to honor Macon's past and celebrate its future."
