I like the collection and display of rocks in Georgia, but I especially like the mini zoo they have. The best thing is their planetarium.
Our favorite place was the light room upstairs. The children LOVED it! We also enjoyed the little Sweetgum Trail. This is a pretty good museum for a community of this size -- it's a little tired and worn in places, but mostly well loved.
This museum has a planetarium, gift shop, nature trail, picnic area & rotating exhibits. We recently saw an exhibit about Providence Canyon. It was very interesting. There is a lot to see so bring a lunch & stay from open to close!
I remember going here when I was little so I took my own children there. Interesting exhibits and always some fun event planned (check the website or local paper). If I lived in the area I would get a membership for my kids!
I really enjoyed my visit here. The planetarium was fantastic, there was a small zoo with a couple of different types of animals (mostly amphibian), an interactive area, art gallery, and some walking trails. Due to weather, we had to leave the beautiful trails alone, but I found the planetarium to be fantastic. Great speaker and good shows. The Black Hole exhibit was still being constructed and it took up a large chunk of the museum, so I was disappointed that we couldn't experience that. The interactive section also had a few things that weren't working at the time, so that was a bit disappointing. Overall, very good!
My wife and I visited over the Labor Day weekend. We knew nothing about the museum, but went anyway. It's a fun place. There are some wonderful temporary exhibits (holograms, model ships) and some other permanent exhibits. A bit of art, a bit of science. The planetarium was high quality. I can see that there are also some innovative activities for young people. I was surprised at the quality of the museum in Macon - didn't expect it to be so good!
Took my twin nine year old grandsons to the Macon Art and Science Museum and we all had a great time. Many interactive exhibits, art, animals, and a gyro that you ride. They have a senior rate of $8 and kids were only $5 each. Museum held the kids interest and they actually learned something. We plan on returning one evening to take advantage of the planetarium. I know your children will enjoy the museum. I guarantee it!
My children age 7 and 10 loved the Museum of Arts and Sciences! The exhibit at the time was The Black Hole so there was a lot for children to do and see! I myself.... got motion sickness from the Planetarium so that is something not to see if you are easily bothered by motion sickness! lol
Some very cool hands on exhibits kids learned alot we had fun trying to work out some of the optical illusions...we where told by the staff that the exhibition changes every few months making each visit unique
I remember going to the Museum when I was in elementary school. I thought it would be a good experience for my niece (age 5) and it was! She loved it and wants to go back. I read that funding from the city will probably be cut and thus some of the programs will be closed. This would be a shame. What a resource for the middle GA area. They have a planetarium and animal shows and various other things to do that make learning fun.
Always a good draw from way back when...they don't have the cave like they used to, but the are plenty of other attractions.
My husband and I drove from Atlanta to see this Museum of Arts and Sciences for something interesting to do. What we read online was that it was the largest museum in Georgia. Perhaps we came at the wrong time or something, but there was no one around in any of the exhibit areas to give a live tour or discussion. This is definitely focused on families and children. Not saying this is negative - just that it needs to be headlined in the info found online. There was lots and lots of areas for children to sit and draw or examine, etc. but really nothing for adults here. We would have liked to see the planetarium, but it had only 2 showtimes, and we weren't going to be there that long to see it. We would have enjoyed it more with children or grandchildren.
Wonderful place to take a family outing, tons to do and see! Has great programs year round!! A must visit and see their awesome bird Georgia!!
I like the quaint little feel of the museum, Really loved the planetarium show, the kids loved it an the temp in there was just right for a quick nap in the dark under the stars, in the comfy reclining seats. Kids said it was awesome and they are 12 and 13. Husband was able to see the Titanaboa exhibit that me and the daughter saw at the Smithsonian a couple of years ago on a school D.C. trip. Over all, it was a unique memorable experience that brought back memories for me as I grew up in Macon and visited the same planetarium as a kid myself :).
Great place to visit on a hot summer afternoon. Live animals and science experiments for kids. The planetarium is very nice and modern. Also on Fridays they open the observatory, so kids can look through telescopes to see different planets and stars. From Venus to Saturn depending on the time of year. They also have art and science exhibits year round. Fantastic summer camp for younger kids.
