We enjoyed our visit here. We elected to take the guided tour also and enjoyed wandering around this grand old home. Our guide was great answering questions and giving us the history of the home, but also insight into life in the area over in bygone years.
We'd never heard about the Hay House, but were traveling through Macon and decided that we would select one thing to see. We saw the house in the AAA book, so we went. The restorations and recreations were fabulous. It was so interesting to see the styles of home that ultra rich people chose back then. Definitely a hidden gem.
We were on a long road trip from Colorado to Amelia Island, Fl last year and decided to stop in Macon and see what might be interesting there. We saw the reviews of Hay House on Tripadvisor and decided to stop. We were on a fairly large tour as a bus group arrived at about the same time. Our tour guide was great and it did not seem like we were in a crowd. It was easy to hear him and the house is incredible. We payed a little extra to tour the upper floors and we would definitely recommend that. We were able to go up in the elevator and we were the only ones on that part of the tour. Very interesting home!
Visiting friends I the Macon area, two of us decided to visit the historic area and I came across the Hay House. It was close time wise to the last tour so we decided to do it. I was not let down at all. Not once. From the amazing windows to the hideaway doors all the way up to the little tower (don't remember what they called it) that we were able to go out on and see a 360° view of Down town Macon. Our guide was absolutely amazing at explaining every detail to us and answering all my question to the best of his ability. He has only been there a short time but was full of sooo much knowledge. I was a little bummed I couldn't take pictures past the first floor of which there are 7 levels of this amazing house. But there were some nice pictures in the booklet brochure that I was able to take back with me. I would absolutely recommend this tour and house to anyone who loves American history.
We did the Antebellum Trail and this one Must STOP. This home was built in the 1850's and over the years housed several of the notable families of Macon. We had a special treat since it was decorated for Christmas. The 30,000 square foot mansion was complete renovated of the first floor and was very opulent. The woodwork, floors and doors were exceptional, especially the large pocket doors. Don't miss this stop in Macon.
Made me feel like I grew up in this house. I loved the tour! My daughter and I went with my parents. Felt like a southern belle! Loved all the history, and the secret rooms all over, and seeing the house set up the way it was when the Hay family owned it. Was probably one of the most memorable events!
Attended wedding at Hay House, so can't attest to "tour" questions. Can say only 1 restroom in basement level that's not easily accessible.
I have lived in Macon several years but just made it for a tour, the house was absolutely beautiful and the tour was well done. I appreciated how informative it was.
We have visited many historic houses and without a doubt this was the most impressive. The style and innovative designs throughout were superb. I would definitely recommend a visit.
Even if you live in Macon, the Hay House is history that should not be missed. It is a beautiful relic from the past that we encourage you to explore. As a child, the spiral staircase was off limits to visitors, but that is no longer the case. Visitors are allowed all the way up to the rotunda, which is a treat for those agile and small enough to fit through the incredibly small opening. The trip up the spiral staircase entails an additional fee, which may turn off some. Those familiar with my reviews know that maximizing cost means a great deal to me, and additional fees for segmented attractions almost are almost never worth it. And the Hay House is no exception. You'll lose out in value if you limit your tour to just the lower floors, and it is designed this way of course. A flat fee for the entire attraction would be most welcome. The Hay House of Macon, Ga shouldn't be missed, though. Peak hours are on weekends, of course, and the house is NOT air conditioned. If you visit during the summer, you enter the upper floors at your own risk! Still, do yourself a favor a pay a visit.
Beautiful house and superb tour. Tour lasted an hour yet the time flew by. So much history here and so nice that so much is known about this very unusual style home for it's time.
I enjoyed seeing the house but would have liked to see some labels or info on some of the paintings and other things that were in the house. I felt like our guide could have explained a little more but still she was good. If they had more markings than you would not have to ask questions about things which there were so many more questions I would have loved to ask or things to know but did not....everyone else had their own questions. I did take the 4 dollar top of the stairs tour which they mention later. I was with a group so maybe the leader was told about this up front and just chose not to do it with us. Several of us in our group did go....it's worth the money. I feel as long as you are there you might as well see the whole house. The view was nice. The house story very interesting. I also got to see the Winston Churchill exhibit downstairs which is going on for a few weeks.
Outside of the Biltmore Estate, the biggest single family home I have ever seen. Makes the homes in Charleston and Savannah seem small. Built for $100,000 during the Civil War, what would that cost today? Worth stopping the trip to see and do. Sherman didn't burn Macon and this is the crown jewel. While you are here visiting this historic mansion, look around...more historic districts here than in Savannah. Lot to see and do in a good long weekend. Have fun.
The Hay House is fascinating, but keep in mind, it is not air conditioned, so keep visits to cooler days. Well worth the admission , though..Loved it.
Coming from England what American's regard as 'historical' can often be interesting. The Hay House in Macon is an example of this. Relatively new by European standards the locals see it as ancient. Well preserved and well guided at a reasonable price - worth going - we also went to The Cannonball House nearby - also interesting.
