It would take days to appreciate every item on display, and they say that is only a third of the collection. A remarkable achievement and a tribute to the handful of people who weren't willing to let the music die in Macon.
Well worth the trip while travelling on I-75. Easy to get to. Walk down memory lane for baby boomers who remember the era of the Allman Brothers Band. Richard, the collection and merchandise director, was amazing to talk to and learn about ABB, Government Mule, Warren Haynes, Tedeschi Trucks Band and all members over the years. If you are looking for the hard to find CD or vinyl, it is in The Big House.
What an interesting and enjoyable museum! Driving down from Canada can be boring but this stop, conveniently just blocks from the I-75, made a great road trip moment. The volunteer staff are great (thanks Greg!) and knowledgeable. We so enjoyed this very personal look at the early days for this great southern band. The gift shop, staffed by a helpful volunteer too, was fun and stuffed with must-have Allman items. A great vibe!
An absolute must-see for any Allman Brothers Band fan. A definite must-see for any southern rock fan. A must-see for an 70s rock fan. Greg (no, not that Gregg) walked around with me giving me added details and insights into the home and the collection. The whole staff just seemed to have a passion for the place and the band.
When we bought the GroupOn to visit we did not know what to expect. Now we have a place to take future guests to. Who knew we had a treasure like this so close by. A treasure chest of 1960-1970's rock history. I put this place at the top of the list for any visitor to Macon. A must see!
the thrill to actually see where the band lived in their hey days - the collection of personal items - the sheer history -
For any Allman Brothers Band fans this is a must. They supply walk through notes for all the exhibits at the museum and also a plan of Rose Hill Cemetery were Duane Allman and Berry Oakley are buried as well as the grave of Elizabeth Reed who was inspiration for Berry's song. Bothe Museum and Cemetery are very easy to get to.
You have for to visit The Big House if you're a true fan. It's like going back in time when your standing in Duane Allman's bedroom or gazing into the closet of Berry Oakley's daughter. The place is full of memorabilia that you will spend hours studying. Everyone that works there will gladly speak about anything you want to know. They are all knowledgeable about the brothers. Don't miss this one!
Whether or not you are an Allman Brothers fan or just a music fan this museum is top rate. If you are an Allman Brothers fan it is Hallowed grounds. Beautifully done, gives you a glimpse into a family of musicians where there is so much heart! This has been put together with so much love and care that it can't help but rub off. I can't recommend it enough and a major reason to go to Macon Georgia.
If you're a fan of the Allman Brothers, you can't miss this attraction. I highly recommend going to one of the local concert venues, bring a sack lunch and sit on the lawn and enjoy. The memorabilia is amazing, with everything from guitars to guides that show the history of the Allman Brothers.
This museum was amazing, I loved everything about it! I felt like I was stepping on hallowed ground from the moment I stepped out of the vehicle. All the staff there were so friendly and knowledgeable, especially a man named (of all things) "Greg" who took his time to talk w/us, and took us though some of the rooms. I highly recommend any fan of music take a break and visit The Big House Museum!
I wanted to visit the Big House since long time and finally had the chance to do it.The exhibition has an unbelievable amount of memorabilia from The Allman Brothers Band as well as all the side projects (e.g. Gov't Mule) and guides you through the history of an undoubtedly legendary musicianship into the place itself where most of this legendary music was created or conceived!!! I felt quite emotional on some of the items shown, like the dress worn by Berry Oakley's daughter Brittany on the "Brothers and Sisters" cover, just to name one.The house itself is simply beautiful and it clearly shows how strong the relationship (or I'd rather call it brotherhood) of those who lived there was.Last but not least, a big kudos goes to Richard, the curator of the museum, who was unbelievably friendly and available to answer any of our questions! Visiting the Big House has definitely changed my life.“I love being alive and I will be the best man I possibly can. I will take love wherever I find it and offer it to everyone who will take it. Seek knowledge from those wiser and teach those who wish to learn from me.”-- Duane Allman
I visited the Big House back in September. Wow. Seeing the spot where some big hits were written is pretty cool. Plus outside of the display cases filled with great Allman Brothers history, much of the house feels like it could still be lived in. My favorite room was the listening room complete with a record player and floor couch. It felt like marijuana would be offered next as a tribute. Ha!A must see when visiting Macon.
Great musical history with a flare! The museum is laid out where you get a real feel for the Allman Brothers!
I aI am not from Macon. Moved here in 1980. I have lived in Atlanta, Virginia and Florida. I started playing music (saxophone) in 1956 and have played in many bands and played many different venues over the years. Oddly enough I had never heard about the Allman Brothers or their music until I moved to Macon so it has been an education learning about them and listening to their style. For the past three years I have also been a part of the Skydog Tribute concert playing in the horn section.I visited the museum last year to see what they had done in the old house. I was impressed. The people who put it together are to be congratulated big time. Awesome job with photos, album covers and personal items. One of the finest music museums I have ever visited! Even if you are not a fan or very knowledgeable about their music you should visit the house to see what a great job they have done with the memorabilia and the band's history.Hopefully there will be more displays of other noted Macon artists in various Macon locations in years to come.
