We found it by chance and so enjoyed walking around. Great exercise. Wish now we had downloaded the app and taken the tour
The drive through this cemetery is beautiful and full of gorgeous monuments and tombstones. There is a sizable confederate section, a former First Lady buried here, a Known Soldier and many other attractions of interest, including a new Mausoleum.
This is a place with a lot of history, and has great views of the city. Need to allow time to be able to walk around to look at all of the headstones.
Beautiful Cemetery with some historical burial plots. At the top of Myrtle Hill, you can see most of the City of Rome. A little sketchy at night but worth a trip during the day.
This is a very historic cemetery located in Rome. The older headstones are elaborate and beautiful. There is a confederate burial area which is very interesting. The view from the top of the hill is really breathtaking, its one of the best views of Rome and I know many people who would picnic there. The road around the cemetery is winding and narrow, its quite and adventure. So if you are hesitant you might want to park and walk. I really do urge you to look up some of the history before you go, even if its a quick wikipedia visit. It will make the trip a lot more interesting.
This is amazing, you can walk it or as we did drive up the amazing mountain.Check your smart phone for the app its a guide through the cemetery.. I could not find it though.
The cemetery has a great view of downtown Rome and the surrounding area. Old elaborate headstones and history.
My 13 yr old son actually asked to visit this spot when we read about it in a hotel guidebook. It is beautiful and peaceful and the "road" through the cemetery was quite an adventure in itself! We took lots of photos, and he enjoyed seeing the "ancient" tombstones. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
I never thought I would enjoy walking through a cemetery but I loved this. It was interesting seeing how long people had been laid to rest there. They also have many statues to honor certain people that had done great things. We also looked at the soldiers markers. If you have the chance take a stroll through it.
While a cemetery may not be on your usual list of tourist attractions, please keep an open mind on this one. Aside from the beautiful and historiical grave markers, this location offers the best viewpoint of the entire city of Rome. Some of Rome's most beautiful photographs have been taken from the peak of Myrtle Hill Cemetery. Here you can see the convergence of two rivers to form the third, the beautiful bridges and the clocktower, the town center, the old courthouse and many other sites. The graveyard itself is beautiful. It has been featured in movies. Nothing in Hollywood is more representative of a grand, peaceful, old South cemetery. There are huge old trees, hills, and monuments. You can spend hours walking the circle and reading the epitaphs. It is more interesting if you do a little research beforehand to know the history of some of the more interesting citizens buried there. I recommend flat walking shoes and comfortable clothes. Don't forget your camera.
Myrtle Hill Cemetery is one of the oldest and most historical cemeteries in Rome GA. President Woodrow Wilson's wife is buried here. A stop at The Welcome Center will give you ideas about what to look for in the cemetery. If you are looking for exercise, it is also a good hike that offers beautiful views of the city and surrounding countryside from the top. And it is right downtown.
If you are interested in history and especially the history of Rome, then going and visiting myrtle hill is a must do. That place is chop full of interesting history of rome and the civil war type stuff
Very historical and well maintained. Several Civil War graves. Widow of President Woodrow Wilson buried here.
Myrtle hill gives a beautiful overlook of the river, downtown rome, and is full of history! It is one of my favorite places to read and relax outdoors in Rome.
We enjoy old cemeteries for the history. You never know what you will find on a tombstone and for that reason we always take our camera so we can read them later. This particular cemetery has narrow roads circling it to the top. Some roads are closed off and most all of them are on the edge so you're at risk of sliding off if you get too close. We have been here several times and find something interesting every time.
