Take in the covered bridge, the old dam and waterfall, and ruins of the old Roswell Mill. Walk along the creek (just don't swim), bring along a picnic. Great way to spend a day with your dogs (who generally love playing in the creek), your children, your friends and your spouse - even the lazy ones like me. Plenty of no cost parking and lots of friendly people and families on the trails. The area is more than just one trail. Get a copy of the trails maps from Google. While there are trail maps in the park - some have been destroyed. Before or after you are done with the trail, walk up the hill from covered bridge and eat at one of the local places.
I enjoy this park often. A great walk with nice ups and down paths and great scenery. Today, as I was finishing my walk a pretty little terrier came along the trail, lost and confused. Well groomed but with no collar. It followed me back to the parking lot at a distance, then stayed a few feet away. Obviously a lost and confused pet. I went personally to the park HQ on Roberts Drive and interrupted the young ranger's personal phone conversation. Well when she put her caller on hold advising them, "hold on just a second," I took it that I was not going to get much of this employees time or attention. After hearing about the dog, I gave her a detailed description, she took no notes and just said. "Well we can keep the information but you know there is not much. . . ". That was it. She got back to her call. I came home and made some calls and animal control is going to send someone to check it out. Where do they find federal employees so utterly devoid of initiative who care so little?
At first, I did not know where all of the trails were (on the other side of the covered bridge) and I walked the paved trails first. These were really nice and an easy walk along the river. Once the trails were found, they were great! Well marked so you can choose how long/short you want to walk and prevented you from getting lost. You can tell how pretty the scenery was because there was a lot of people taking engagement and wedding pictures near the covered bridge.
You feel as if you've gone to north Georgia to hike. Nice loop trails with a walk to the old mills dam. Bring your pets for a walk. You'll see deer and may hear the coyotes!
Everyone seems to love the falls, but the trails surrounding them are fantastic. Good hills, well maintained, excellent variety, and marked just enough to not be intrusive the Vickery Creek Trail is my favorite short nature hike in Georgia. Make sure you park near the old mill and bring some water, because you'll want to keep going and going and finding your way back to one of the smaller parking lots can be a bit difficult if you want too long and are tired. Also, if you bring your dog, please also bring bags. If you want to have a picnic, the rocks at the bottom of the falls are good, but there are benches at the top where you can watch the water calmly descend over the precipitous.
I really like this hike. You can start out down by the river and then end up by the Roswell Mill. And you are away from cars, etc. A great day hike destination.
I live only a couple of miles from "the mill" and is has become pone of my favorite hike places around Roswell, great place to trow a hammock and hike.
I almost don't want to rate this too high - as it seems like a hidden treasure. Have been going here for years and the trails have only improved. Vickery Creek itself is beautiful and refreshing on a hot summer day - even if only to walk by. Amazing that this is right near downtown Roswell.
Vickery Creek Park, located in Roswell, offers several miles of hiking trails, some alongside the Big Creek that drains into the river. In addition to the covered bridge and some historical buildings, the quiet trails offer decent elevation changes along semi-maintained paths. With the rain we've had of late, some parts of the paths require some caution when walking. The dog enjoyed it a lot as well.No fee for enjoying the park, although there is a $3 parking fee (free to those who buy the Chattahoochee Parks pass for $20/yr).
If you would like to enjoy the beautiful weather but don't want to drive the the N Georgia mountains, than pack a picnic and head to Vickery Creek. You can park at the entrance on Azalea dr or park at the covered bridge behind ivy Hall. You can even park on Oxbo and cross the bridge to the trail. Super trails with just the right amount to up and down hills to make it feel like you really are in the mountains! The lovely waterfall and covered bridge are perfect resting spots!
The PATH Foundation has built this 2.25 mile RT trail that connects Medlock Park to Mason Mill Tennis Center. It traverses and follows South Peachtree Creek and bridges over an active rail line. An interesting site is the ruins of the original water works for the City of Decatur. The path is mostly wooded and it had many users of all ages on the warm winter day we visited. It is suitable for bikes, strollers and walkers, anything without a motor.
First things first. Can be a tad hard to find. Take the very first left on Riverside after you turn off, or cross, Atlanta Street just north of the river in Roswell. Use the Vickery Trail parking lot at three dollars, or park free in the Don White Park just across the street. Great trail through the woods takes you on several hundred feet of elavation as well as easy level stretches. Traverse the perimeter trails counter clockwise and visit the old mill dam and covered bridge the back to parking lot. A little over four miles. Good workout--in fact a hard workout if you run it. Wear sturdy shoes unless you are young, intrepid or have strong ankles. Lots of roots and rocks. Now the downside. It gets very muddy in wet weather at least in low lying parts. Also the National Park Service just likes to ride around make cameo appearances. They do very little to keep the trails clear, and fallen trees blocking trails stay there for many weeks usually. Not a bad enough issue to turn one off to a great trail, but it makes me wonder how they justify a parking fee.
This is a dream of a place to hike, take photographs, paint, just enjoy the beauty of it all. I recommend this to everyone. The old mill ruins, the machinery shop, the dam, all take you back into time when Roswell first began in the 1830-1840's.
This is a great intown hiking area that is beautiful and can be as challenging or easy as you want. Over 6 miles total area of hiking. Great place to hike Sat am then head to the Riverside Roswell Farmers Market.
