We tried to see as much as we could in the hour we had before it closed and would recommend at least 2 hours here. Both the information centre and the Ebenezer Church closed at 5:00 so make sure you see these first. A walk up the street to see the home where he was born is only a few minutes away. We didn't take the house tour and. Not sure if it is worth the fee as everything else is free. His and his wife's tomb is set on a pedestal surrounded by water just in front of the eternal flame which creates a moment to reflect on what they both did to help advance the cause of civil rights.
What is it like to grow up in a upper middle class family and then dedicate your life to struggle for your birth rights. Unless you see and feel these places - you will never know.
Visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site has to be one of the most humbling experiences I've had during our visits to Atlanta. Of course, the visit is interesting from an educational and historical standpoint, but there's more to it than that. Touring the site, seeing personal and King family mementos, and really allowing yourself to appreciate the man commemorated here is an emotional experience. One sees the struggles that MLK endured, the hardships faced by him, his family, and his colleagues in the Civil Rights movement, and the legacy left behind by one man who was taken away at a young age. Many of us want to see Martin Luther King, Jr., the legend, but when one visits the site, one also appreciates that he was, in addition to being an almost mythic figure, a husband, father, brother, son, and friend.
Nice. I always get emotional when I visit. Great place to see and experience. Enjoyed it even though I shed tears.
What a great experience to be able to visit the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta. The Interpretative Centre did a great job of demonstrating what he achieved in his relatively short life and highlighted the power of what one man with a message can achieve.Unfortunately, we arrived a little too late in the day to qualify for tickets for the tour of his birth home. However, the walk up the street from the Interpretative Centre still gives you the chance to view the building from the outside and to fully appreciate just how compact this area of Atlanta is.We walked the 2km from our hotel to the district, and caught the Atlanta Streetcar part of the way back. All up, a must see whilst you are in Atlanta and a chance to reflect on what we all can do to make things a little better.
Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site is an exciting visit to do. In the neighborhood where dr. King grew up and became a world icon and hero, the visit center has great films and a kind of museum about his history. A must see for people who likes history and to understand Georgia and America society.
I found the way the exhibits were presented told the story of this period in history in a thorough and informative, yet easily-digestible way.
Very nice to see this place and learn more about MLK and the civil rights movement. We brought our kids here and they kept talking about what they learned in school and understood the importance of this part of our history.
Parking is free for this site and it is a short walk to the center. Get there early to sign up for a tour to get into the MLK home where he grew up. We arrived at 10am and the morning slots were gone. The 20 min. movie about the house and family as he grew up was most interesting. The center itself seems geared more to older children but most school-aged children could find something of interest.
The site is simple and stresses Dr. Kings concern for human rights all over the world. It also taught me how much his wife accomplished in her lifetime as well. It is a very humbling experience and eye opening as always. The Sweet Auburn Curb Market is nearby and a good place for lunch. We used the streetcar to get to both places.
