horsetrough falls

The first time we tried to go to this waterfall we were stopped by a tow truck trying to pull a truck back on the road ( the idiot tried to make a 3 point turn in the dark). He could'nt do it and called for a bigger tow truck so we turned around when we could and get out of there not realizing that the road goes out the other side. The second time we made it up there but this road is very narrow and you pray you don't run into another car. We went in Jan so the campground was closed and we had to walk in from the gate. It's still a short walk for a really nice waterfall.

The unpaved road goes for miles, many potholes and NARROW as all get out. It was a cold rainy day so luckily we didn't come upon any cars going the other way on the goat path.Not a drive for the faint of heart. But sure was pretty.

It takes quite a bit to get there and it's right next to a campsite, which is why I know about it. I have camped there many times and walking to the waterfall at night is really cool. Not really worth the drive by itself, but if you are camping in the area it is an added bonus for camping.

Horsetrough Falls is located down a 4 mile unpaved road, slow going for quite some time, but doable in my Honda CRV. It's just a few miles outside of Helen. At the 4 mile mark there is a large campground along the river, with toilets and tables as well as campsites. Part of it was locked off when I visited on 11/1/14. We parked as close to the locked gate as possible and walked through the campground to the trail head. The hike to the falls is less than .5 miles one way, but the hike through the campsite added another mile round trip to the hike. The falls, over 100 ft high, is nestled in the woods and viewed from a small platform. There are 2 other falls nearby, but we could not find the trail head to these and there were no signs or blazes indicated their location. My suggestion is to find other more accessible falls, unless you wish to camp here and stay for a while.
