Seeing Spider Rock brought chills down my spine. This place is very special. We viewed it from the top of the canyon. There's also tours that will take you down to the base. Very impressive seeing these 2 towers
We drove to the cliff edge early morning and were alone. There was a faint mist rolling in and it was dead quiet. Spider Rock gradually began to glow as the rising sun lit up the canyon. It was spiritually sublime.
It was worth the drive from the visitor center of Canyon de Chelly NP along the south rim to Spider Rock. After the stupendous sights in monument valley the night before, this was a little bit of alet down; however, because of the adjacent landforms and the fact this was rising from a flat canyon floor, it was spectacular in its own way. As noted in another review of this area, we regretted not having taken a horse trek into the bottom of the canyon: I am positive that Spider Rock would have looked otherworldly from below.
The hike from the parking area is worth it to see this gorgeous view of Spider Rock. Unless you take an all day tour through the canyon, you don't get to see this very special feature. Wonderful photo opportunities from this overlook. A must see!
We saw the Spider Rock from the overlook on the South Rim drive, after a 30 min ride on a nice paved road from the canyon Welcome Center (it requires at least 2 hours on a guided tour of the canyon floor to get there). There was nobody around, and the whole experience cannot be explained by words.
What's not to like. Spider rock is just plain beautiful geology. If you're in the neighborhood you'll go there. It's on the south drive at the end.
Spider Rock is one of the treasured attractions at Canyon de Chelly and it is regarded as a sacred place. It is the last stop (or first) along the South Rim drive. This 800ft monolith is the focus of some Navajo folklore and spiritual beliefs as the Navajo believe that it is the home of their Spider Woman deity. One story tells of a peaceful Navajo youth out hunting in the nearby Dead Man's Canyon when he was chased by an enemy tribe. The young man ran from his enemies and eventually ended up at Spider Rock. Unfortunately the rock was too difficult to climb and he thought he was doomed. That's when he saw a silken cord hanging down from the top of Spider Rock and quickly used it to help him climb to the top and elude his chasers. At the top of Spider Rock he nurtured himself on eagle's eggs and quenched his thirst with night dew. He soon found out that his rescuer was none other than the Spider Woman. Another story tells of the Spider Woman picking up naughty children to her nest at the top of Spider Rock where she would eat them. The white ring at the top of the monolith represendted the beached bones of disobedient children.Spider Woman is so revered by the Navajo as they believe that it was her who thought the Navajo the fine art of weaving. There are short paths that you can follow that will take you to an incredible vantage point to view the monolith. For photographers, depending on the time of year, you might want to get there mid-morning to early afternoon. If you get there too early, the facing side of the monolith could be silhouetted. If you get there too late, the lower setting sun would cause the opposing canyon wall to bathe the monolith in shadows. Vendors are not allowed at the Spider Rock.
What a majestic rock formation. Level easy hiking to the over looks. Beautiful views. Spend some time here enjoying the views of the distant horizons.
This is a terrific sight from the rim. I would strongly recommend a valley tour to visit it from the canyon side as well. Visiting at sunset is a little too late as the light leaves the rock early due to the nearby canyon rim. A great place to sit a spell and watch the light dance on the canyon
Really excellent rock formation. Good to see from the overlook--better from the canyon floor. (You'll have to get a jeep or horseback trip to get back to it.)
This is best visited as the sun sets because the sun makes the rock shine with red colors. Be sure to read all the information boards.
Just sitting watching the light change and listening to the sounds of the canyon is an amazing experience.
I'm sure rock climbers just salivate when they see Spider Rock. Mother Nature has formed so many amazing and stunning structures for us to see that took water, time, wind, and erosion.Glad we drove around to find this in Canyon de Chelly.
Certainly well worth a visit to this impressive and interesting part of the canyon. It is quite awe-inspiring.
Along the south rim, this is the last stop, and you wnat to make sure you don't miss it. The 800 foot spire rising from the floor of the canyon is worth the 200 yard walk to the several outlooks
