We love this place! You can learn about the species of fish in the center, see the fish in their beds, walk around the show pond and feed fish there, walk nearby trails and even see varieties of birds (we saw a blue heron land in the top of a nearby tree on our last visit!). What an awesome way to spend an hour or two!
I love this place! Take the grandkids and other children to see all the fish at the fish hatchery up close! It also has trails on both sides of the river, plus blackberries to pick and mulberries when in season. Lots of blue herons. You can take trails around the fish hatchery, but also drive 1/4 mile and park in the bird watchers parking lot and take a loop trail. There are benches to sit on and enjoy the quiet and sounds of birds!!
My husband and I dropped in when we noticed the place as we were leaving the Paige Springs Vineyard. Luckily we had our binocs and we did a bit of bird watching. It was not the ideal time of day, but we still spotted a noisy great blue heron, an osprey and several types of ducks. (watch out for mosquitos)
The tour is a 'self tour' so you have all the time needed to read the history of the hatchery and see all the fish. There is even a small fish history center located inside.
Interesting to learn about how fish are raised and transported once raised. Pretty views of Oak Creek. Free. Unless you pay 25 cents to feed the fish in the pond.
The visitor center and hatchery itself were interesting to see, but not worth more than 15-20 minutes. On the other hand, there are a variety of birds, we saw quite a few, including black hawks and osprey over the river.
I will go to the Page Springs Fish Hatchery to write when my mental state gets too hectic from "city" life in Sedona. The fish are nice, but the quiet and peaceful surroundings are what I like the most. This is a place where you won't find too many other visitors, and when you do see others, they generally treat the place with quiet and respect. Even the kids seem to know that you just need to quiet down when you are in such a place, where nature holds court, and not man.
Self guided tours are fine, but it sure would be nice if there were maps with pictures of what you can see and where they could be located. Birds, fish species, trees, history of the area..etc Easy enuf to do with a digital camera and a computer these days. we were in and out of there in 20 minutes.
This is a great way to escape the heat and visit Oak Creek. Nature abounds. Cranes nest in the area. You can get up and personal in the hatchery to see the different stages of development. There are some trails and picnic tables close to the water to enjoy the scenery and have a picnic.. This is a Birding area as well.
We were fortunate enough to be at the hatchery while they were loading up the fish to take to their new homes. The ladies were very helpful and informative about the fish, the process, growing and transporting the fish.
Nice walking around the grounds. You are pretty much by yourselves. Its educational and the kids would be wowed by the teaming fish
Average fishery, with self guided tour. Not much to see except a bunch of fish in tanks and a pond with some walking trails......
Came here early one morning and saw a variety of ducks and herons along with various birds. A sign in the parking lot is good indication of the birds you may see.
self-guided tour and we got to feed the fish; quick getaway - lots of fish to look at and kids really enjoyed this. open daily
Take the kids to feed the trout or just sit and listen to the water. Hike a short trail. Nice little stop along Page Springs road.
