Took some friends who were visiting from out of town on the Salt River Canyon ride. Great day and they were just amazed at the scenery and roads.
We rented a car in Phoenix and drove to Route 88 in Apache Junction. Hours later we made it back in a huge circle through spectacular scenery. We are exploring a variety of locations throughout AZ and this is one of the nicest drives. Be aware, railings are optional, so is paving. Bring water, snacks and a camera. You really see a wide variety of terrain and fauna. Spring flowers are starting to bloom. We made several stops along the way to take photographs (which never do it justice) when looking at the panoramic vistas. Stopped and hiked up to the Tonto Monument, which was worth the visit. Treated ourselves to a excellent Mexican dinn in Globe (check out restaurant ratings on TA). Long, beautiful day, highly recommend it!
The canyon is beautiful--spectacular. However, the rest of the drive is not comparable to other drives near Phoenix, such as Highway 87 between Payson and Mesa and Route 60 between Globe and Superior. The canyon is 103 miles from Phoenix.
We drove from Mesa to Show low through the Salt lake scenic route and it was a pleasant drive. In my opinion, if one has seen the Grand Canyon, this is on a much smaller scale. One drives down to the bottom of the canyon to cross the river and up again on the other side. If it is on your way, it can be an interesting detour and that is about it.
It was beautiful with plenty of pull offs for scenic viewing and photos. It is a slow trip. It's all about nature, so make sure you are gassed up and have drinks and snacks. Beautiful trip
This is a beautiful place to drive. I call it the Minnie Grand Canyon. A must see. The road is winding, so watch out how you drive and see the beauty.
If you pick your time, go on the early morning. The colors are brighter giving the canyon a wonderful glow. This is a drive worth making.
This scenic wonderment is not heavily visited yet you should see it.It's gorgeous. What else can I say - see this canyon !!
I travel a lot through the Canyon. It was sad the rest area was closed. After the years it's finally reopening. And it couldn't come at a good time. I buy all my gifts down at the canyon where there are Natives who sell their jewelry. Hopefully I'll see them again for some shopping
Quite a winding road with amazing views. The road goes all the way down to the bottom of the canyon and back up the other side.
We spent our summers at Juniper Ridge Rv and Golf Resort for the past five years and passed through here many times! Gorgeous every trip!
Absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous! Like being able to drive through the Grand Canyon. And lots of green and flowers from a rainy summer!
From desert to cliffs and spectacular rock formations, this drive was quite a surprise. The road switchbacks were amazing.
When you need a twisty ride this is a great place to unwind and fully enjoy. There are stopping points on each end of the canyon so you can start and/or regroup before and after your ride through the canyon.
Some people call it the mini-Grand Canyon and you'll see why when you check out this area just 40 minutes north of Globe. There are several overlooks and they are superb. The road is plenty wide to ensure that it won't give passengers an anxiety attac.
