We weren't sure what to expect when we visited this museum, but it turned out to be a fabulous way to discover information about the history of the area and the culture. We had a private tour and ended up staying for several hours. It was especially interesting to see the exhibit about the various nationalities of people who settled in Globe to work in the copper and turquoise mines. The museum is a work in progress, but it is well worth seeing.
This is one of those charming "local" museums that totally reflect the area history and culture, but are also informative on a larger scale. This was originally a school and is being carefully restored, so it's interesting as a building as well. Because of the name, I expected it to have a larger exhibit related to the area mining processes -- and there is information on that -- but there is also a section on the history of Slavic people in the area, on military history, on making decorative tile, a mineral exhibit, art work, AND items from Rose Mofford's personal collection (the first woman governor of Arizona, who is from nearby Globe), and more. The Hispanic history collection had been removed while work was being done on that room, for example, and I particularly liked the large bas relief depictions of famous paintings of early American history. That's the charm of such places --- a highly unpredictable collection of Americana. There is a LOT in this museum, and so far only the first floor has been reopened. I suspect you could come here every few months and find new things each time. The building also serves as a cultural center, with local events, including a weekly lecture series.
Seems like much work has been going on here and the former school building looks great. Displays were fair and a little more work to go on some of them. Rooms were large and open and the staff was more than willing to help with any questions. The museum displays the history of Globe-Miami and much of the surrounding area.
Well kept, friendly staff, excellent exhibits. Easy to find and the bonus is they will give you information and brochures about other worth while sights in the area.
I was born and raised in this area; my mother and I both went to Bullion Plaza when it was a school. There have been a lot of changes to the building over the years, but the volunteers have done a wonderful job restoring the building, building display cases, finding and preserving a vast amount of material related to the early days of Miami and our whole area. The Museum also puts on a great variety of fun and educational programs each month, some about local history, some programs about other areas or special people from the early days of Arizona.
The Historical Bullion Plaza School in downtown Miami, Arizona has been beautifully restored and portrays a wide variety of the areas pioneer, mining, ranching, Slavic and Mexican cultures, political dignitaries, crafts such as McKusick tiles, music and gems and minerals. The floors of the school have been sanded and polished to reveal their original beauty. Much community pride and love has obviously brought this old school building back to an exciting and useful life.
Bullion Plaza Museum is located in an historical school building in Miami, Arizona. Much of the main floor has been lovingly restored by volunteers and it houses an exceptional display of minerals and gem quality stones. In addition, the history of early day families has been chronicled in rooms devoted to their Slav, Croatian and Hispanic history. Another section features memorabilia donated by area native and Arizona's first female governor, Rose Mofford. Exhibits on area residents and their military service as well as the ranching history of Gila County round out the offerings of this exceptional museum. The displays are fascinating and this museum is worth a "family day" with something for everyone.
