As I drove through Petrified I picked up beautiful wood samples to bring home. What colors, the drive through Painted desert was icing on the trip. Petroglyphs, the amazing scenery and vibrant colors. If possible, go! P.S. , the samples were bought at Fred Harvey. Y'all take only pictures, no wood please.
This is a small treasure of a national park. The petrified wood is truly amazing and is plentiful to see in its two museums and, even better, out on the paths and drives. It’s amazing to see petrified logs strewn around as if giants had laid them flat centuries ago. The colors and textures of the former wood remain in rock form. This park must be very hot in the summer and was chilly during our December visit, but, even as a drive through with brief stops, it’s worth an hour or two to see this wonder of nature. In ideal weather, this could be a full day’s adventure.
I am working in this part of the country for the summer, so on my days off, i enjoy trying to absorb as much of the local scenery as I can. This place is a "short trip' from where I am staying at Gallup, NM, and I had an enjoyable afternoon visitng this part of the state. NM is called "The Land of Enchantment" for a very good reason.
This is a drive thru with a few pull offs to explore. Road is very well paved. The scenery is so colorful and beautiful, the petrified wood was neat to look at. Great family fun!
The entire park is a marvel! Take time to visit newspaper rock to see over 650 petriglyphs.
