These days, I don't golf, and that's not why I go to this location. Next to the golf course, and open to the public at all times, is a wonderful birding area which includes the lakes after which the golf course was named. This is one of the best havens for shorebirds I know in Arizona, the other one I know about being the Glendale Recharge Ponds. The nice thing about this location is that a birder can get right down to the water at bird-eye level, and there is nothing that obstructs his view. One can easily see and photograph the birds, which for the most part will tolerate a human being who is being quiet and observant. There are also two blinds with scopes. The lake is encircled by a dirt road that is wide enough for travel and parking. Typical beach vegetation (for Arizona, that is), surrounds the lakes, with pure "sand" beaches between this and the water. I have been there several times, and have always seen something new. Expect to see shorebirds, ducks, gulls, and other water birds, whatever happens to be in season, since this is a migratory area.In the winter, there is the possibility of seeing Sandhill Cranes. I have heard them there, but only saw them elsewhere. There are grasslands nearby, and the Cranes prefer this to the open water, although they will also visit the water. In winter in this location south to Whitewater Draw and along 191, there will be up to 30,000 cranes. It is quite a sight to see a thousand or so, and to enjoy their evening ritual of returning to roost for the night. They come in waves of 50 to 200, and two birds on the ground will trumpet them in. It is the most unique air traffic control system I have ever observed. In the evening, on a partly cloudy day, you can observe a sunset over water. Nice!
