If you are interested in musical instruments, this is the place for you. Most of the instruments shown are from the 20th c. The emphasis here is to introduce you to the instruments of the world. The world instrument collections are on a country-by-country basis; divided into sections devoted to the African, Asian, European, North American, and South American continents. These collections are on the second floor, with a section devoted to Arizona artists in the North American section (Alice Cooper, who knew?). The first floor has instruments and ephemera separated by artist (Johnny Cash, Taylor Swift, Elvis, etc.). Visitors are supplied with audio equipment and there are a lot of videos of people--famous and not--playing the instruments shown. The facility is fairly new and architecturally interesting. There is a cafe available and a gift shop. It's a BIG facility and after a while it gets to be a bit much. Also, because the collection goes from one country to another within a certain continent, there is a lot of overlap of similar and identical instruments and it begins to all look alike. But if you are interested in instruments of a particular country--no matter how obscure--it's here.
This wonderfully done museum would be a great stop for not only those with a musical passion, but basically anyone that enjoys listening to any form of music, and have some curiosity about how it evolved to its current form. The expanse of the instrument collection is immense, and the research that must have went into the displays simply incredible. The individual headsets that synchronize with the video/audio displays are an ingenious way for all to enjoy and appreciate the sounds of the instruments and artists and still keep the ambient sound relatively low. What was additionally impressive beyond just a room full of instruments were the profiles of the people and cultures that used and evolved these instruments to basically evolve music up to our current day. Well done!
I had a couple of hours to spend here and didn't see everything. May go back. Lots and lots of interesting instruments including the guitar Elvis used in his last concert. I don't understand why there is so much Taylor Swift. About the same as Elvis. No Neil Diamond, no Motown, no Madonna. Oh well. Still a great way to spend time browsing.
I expected a small-out of the way museum. What we got was an large exceptional museum of the instruments of the world. There was a gallery for each continent and each continent had each country represented. Each display was extremely well done. Leave yourself lots of time. We went in the early morning-left our afternoon baseball game so we could go back to see more . Only open from 9-5 Almost an overload sensory experience there is so much. Spendy for a family.
Everyone should visit here! It is a beautiful building filled with anything and everything related to music over time and around the world. It will take at least two full days to see everything. I am not a musician, and music is not really something I spend a lot of time thinking about or doing....but this museum gave me the greatest appreciation for music...and it's meaning to mankind.I can't stress enough how wonderful the museum is...except to say..." It is worth 3 times the admission cost".
Or maybe you'd prefer to sing, play, strum, pluck or trumpet it from the rooftops. When it comes to Phoenix's unique Musical Instrument Museum, "fabulous" is really the only word that fits. With exhibitions of instruments, artists and genres from across the globe -- and wonderful headphones that let you experience each unique sound or performance as you wander in front of the display -- you get gloriously lost in the diverse sounds of music. One of the most entertaining days I've spent in a very long time.
Wanted to visit since it opened but just brought some out of town friend a couple of weeks ago. I loved the way it was set up , and it was very pretty and clean. I learned alot and want to revisit soon and bring others. Music from around the world and very passionate docents to answer questions. Give your self at least 3 hours and you will see about half. when tired head to the cafe. Local grown stuff used to prepare. Tasty egg salad ( who'd have thought) and salad.
I have to reiterate the comments of other reviewers. Allow plenty of time to tour this museum. I have been to many others, but this one is very pleasantly different from them. It is well worth the price of admission. When you enter, you are handed a set of headphones that enables you to "hear" the music at the exhibit you are viewing. The exhibits seem to cover every type of music: rock, jazz, blues, classical, hip-hop, ethnic.... etc. We adults had a grand time listening to our favorites and discovering new ones. MIM has an interactive space for children to play different instruments. It interested our children for a good hour or longer. (Nice for us, too. We switched off so one of us could watch the children and one could return to the exhibits.) Cafeteria offered a nice variety of food—tasty, too. You can eat inside or bask in the glorious sun outside. Don't miss it! Don't miss it!
This museum is really well organized. It truly gives one an appreciation for how music is a universal language. It is very clever the way the museum is organized with headphones which allows you to hear many examples of the different types of instuments and types of music. It is definitely worth the visit-but do not plan on covering it in 1 day unless you are just walking through.
I am not a musician but this was a great place to visit. The museum is very well organized with musical instruments by continent and country and special exhibits. An amazing array of usual and unusual musical instruments. Great learnjng experience. Spent three hours here and could have stayed longer.
