The store occupies a beautiful location in the Grand Canyon Nationan Park. The store is well stocked and the views from the store are amazing. One thing I did find amusing and a bit strange was Native Indian Art and on the label - "Made In China". I did buy a cap though.
We visited the Grand Canyon the last the last full weekend of February 2015. The weather was perfect. I have gone before but always had to take the shuttle bus this was a much more enjoyable ride because until March 1st you can drive your oven vehicle down Hermits Road. Hermits Rest is the end of the line. If you park at the trailhead parking which is down a dirt road past the Hermits rest paved parking you have a great view of the sunset with very little walking in the dark to get back to your car. If I return to the Grand Canyon again I will try to go before the shuttle bus service and all the crowds arrive!
We visited the Grand Canyon in September of 2014 on our motorcycles. My wife has a disability from a back injury and rides a Trike but has pain/difficulty walking more than a short distance. When we stopped at the ranger's station we found out that one can get a disability pass to ride this road that is normally only open to tour buses during the summer. She was able to get good views of the canyon from the many great view points without having to get off of her motorcycle. The park rangers are very helpful. We couldn't have asked for a better solution to allow her to see the sights and not have to try to walk in and out of a tour bus.Riding the bikes along Hermit Road as the sun was setting was incredible!
After you have gone to end of Hermit Road you come to Hermits Rest where there is a store, food, restrooms and picnic tables. We were here the last week of the year and it was cold, snowy and windy but it's a great time to go because the crowds are not like summer and you can drive your own car at your own leisure pace to each of the stops on the way to the end of the road. This stop, like all others, offers a great view of the canyon. There are also some great photo opps at this stop too.
Beautiful oasis at the end of a long hike. All the amenities you will need while waiting for the return bus.
What a great way to take in a wide variety of all the unique country side that the South Rim has to offer. Great picnic areas long the way and easy access to many different view points. The fun "Hermit's Rest" house and gift shop is a must see. What an amazing place to spend your summer! There is no extra charge for this drive, Your park pass gets you in.
Loved the diversity of the hike. From the old stone pathways, to the fossilized mammal prints to the old stopping points, this is a fascinating hike. Beautiful birds, incredible vistas, variable stone colors/formation and away from the crowds this is a nice break. Hermits rest itself at the start is ok but the hike is stellar
you will get some great pics at this point as well there were a few blue birds in the area not sure what they were though
The tour guides had continually talked about hermits rest on the 60 minuet bus ride there. There are hiking trails there but the view is not they good as since of the other viewpoints
What can I write here! Great, fantastic, amazing is only just some of the words. Hermit rest and trail is one of the most beautiful places in Grand Canyon and from the best I ever visit around the globe. We took the bus from Grand Canyon village to the Hermit's rest and then we walked back to the village. Hard but beautiful!
This took us almost all of one day. It's probably not an all day activity, but with the hiking we did in between each stop, and the photo taking, it took about 5-6 hours. I was really pleasantly surprised with the organization. Every 15 minutes a bus takes you to a different overlook along the road. You can hike to each lookout or wait for the next bus to take you. We really enjoyed the hiking, but as we were pressed for time, we took advantage of both riding and hiking. This trail really did have the most spectacular views, and at Hopi point probably would've been the best place for sunrise/sunset pictures, but unfourtunatley we didn't get to see it at the particular point. This is a must do when you visit the canyon!
On a recent visit to the Grand Canyon National Park we took the bus tour to the West route which ended at Hermit's Rest. The brochure states that there is food available and we were planning to have lunch there. When we got there we saw a dozen people sitting on the sidewalk and having coffee and pop. Well that was about all there was for food other than a muffin or other light snack. There were some picnic tables but they were a ways off and only a couple of them. The view was nice but they shouldn't advertise food (even though they specify snacks, I call hot wings and nachos a snack) when all they have is about the same as you can get at a airport gift shop.
The Hermits rest trail is considered difficult. If you take it only part way, it's not so bad. We have hiked this part way twice. Once to Santa Maria Spring, which is a good lunch spot. This time we took the other side of the trail to Dripping Springs. While we did not make it all the way to the spring, we did very much enjoy this hike. Not many people, NO mules, solitude, gorgeous red canyon alcove once you get around the bend towards Dripping Springs. But, keep in mind that the hike back UP will be sunny, probably hot and lots, lots of steps/stairs/rocks. Bring water, the springs are not for drinking unless you treat the water. Overall a good 4 hour worthwhile hike if you are in decent shape.
This is the end point and turn-around of the shuttle ride. Several spectacular stops along the way to Hermits Rest. There is a well-used restroom and gift shop to peruse.
End of the South Rim trail and pick up/drop off point for the shuttles. Small gift shop and cafe with basic pre-packed sandwiches and soft drinks.
