Loved this gem in Yuma! We had so much fun learning about the history of this area. Great video and little museum and inexpensive fee. Fair warning, most of the area is not shaded. We went on a very pleasant day but it started to get warm towards the end of our visit-- we would've not lasted long if it were any hotter. Visit in the winter
If you are in Yuma, Arizona, you really should take the time to visit the Yuma Territorial Prison. It truthfully is the number one attraction in Yuma. You'll see what is was like to be in prison in the wild old West. Many did not make it out alive. Hell would have been a better punishment. Very informative and very interesting. Take your time to read all of that is written about those who were locked up there. The times were hard and the men who were kept behind bars there were equally as hard. It is a must see visit. Ron.
Great bit of old Yuma history. Very interesting to wander the grounds and imagine life in prison decades ago. Well preserved and maintained. Would highly recommend taking time to visit this attraction while in Yuma.
I'd heard about the Yuma Territorial Prison, and this was one of the main attractions I wanted to see in Yuma. There is a lot of history associated with the prison, and the information you get in the museum gives a sense of what it was like in Arizona in the late 1880s and early 1900s. The facility is small, so it doesn't take long to go thought it. But for anyone interesting in the history of the west, this is a must see if in Yuma. It opens up at 9:00 am, so I suggest you get there early. Because the museum is fairly small, it get very crowded by late morning.
I have passed this Prison quite a few times but never went in to see it. First off, the staff are really nice and helpful. I found this Historic Park to be very interesting. The information, pictures displays and the little movie that they run are all very interesting. If you are ever in Yuma, I would definitely suggest checking it out. Not a place to go every time you go to Yuma, but I would suggest it to anyone to try it at least one time. Bring a camera, very good pictures to be taken. Adults are $6.00, but it is worth it.
Out visit was extremely interesting! The staff are wonderful! We even got a get out of jail free! The tour itself was eye opening! I cannot imagine surviving for very long in these cells! Hell I couldn't even get on the top bunk! What a place! Check it out if you are in Yuma!!
Park staff were friendly. Site has easy parking, lots of detail and history of the town, river access and prisioners. Its definately worth 2-4 hours.
Place yourself back in time and imagine what life must have been like at this historic location. The self guided walk through of original and restored parts of the Prison is very interesting. The fee of $6, when we went, is well worth the price and they also have a great little gift shop that you may browse through when you exit. Bring your camera to catch a good view of the Colorado River and the surrounding mountains from the platform above the water storage facility. The museum building has plenty of artifacts, stories of prisoners and pictures of same. It really does a good job of bringing you back in time, to get an appreciation of what life was like at the prison. The jail cells, SallyPort, Dark Cell and other structures are the highlights in my mind. The prison is volunteer run and the staff in the gift shop were very friendly and helpful. It is a great place to visit.
We stopped here during our overnight stay in Yuma. The museum is small enough to keep small children interested but big enough to entertain even history buffs. There are interesting stories of the various inmates posted through out the prison. Great vistas are to be had as well. The museum is well maintained,.
What a cool place to visit! They offer a military discount ($3 entry fee!) and have a great museum. Lots of amazing artifacts and stories about the prisoners. I highly recommend visiting!
Small fee to pay to enter and view the penal life in the old southwest. Lots of artifact as well as details about the many prisoners who stayed here. Easy to get to and the walking was minimal. If you like old Wild West history, you won't want to miss this. We just missed a re-enactment.
I love supporting locally-managed museums and sites. This is one is a gem. Yes, it's just a prison, but there is some very interesting history that gets presented. The demonstration was a little cheesy, but also quite fun. You get to wander around through the yard, guard tower, cell blocks, etc. Worth the entry price (I feel good about supporting the local organizations).

This is one attraction I wanted to see on our vacation to Yuma. $6 entry fee. Open 9-5 everyday. You can go on a self guided or an organized tour. Nice gift shop. It's not a big area but it is well presented. Definately stop & watch the movie about the history in the theatre & take a free picture wearing convict clothing & a number.
