We were actually trying to find the new arcade museum in Atlanta (it was closed for the day) and stumbled across a giant statue of Paul Bunyan holding a hot dog. Although, now that I think about it - maybe the statue is life-sized and Paul Bunyan was huge. Anyway, it was a pretty sweet find. Why he's holding a hot dog, I have no idea. There's a superb small town library half a block away, maybe they have more information about the statue. If you like books check out the library when you're done at the statue.
It's the little haha big things close to home you might not know. I am from a small town in Illinois and unknowingly drove past this for years. So found about it and stopped I'm glad I did. Standing under a giant was fun. Didn't have the extra time to check out the stores but I will return.
We really enjoyed getting to see all the giant monuments along Route 66! The man in the store next to the Hot Dog Giant statue was lovely! We could have stayed chatting for hours be sure to pop in if you have free time! This guy has the most interesting tales to tell! This town is a must for Route 66 fans!
Make sure to read the story board next to the statue which highlights this and two other Illinois Route 66 giants. It is definitely a good photo opportunity and the surrounding square is chock-full of murals and quaint establishments. Take pictures, read the plaques found onmany of the building's walls, and pop in for a bite or beverage in one of the local shops.
We travelled the whole 2448+ miles of Route 66 and Atlanta has to rate as one of the highlights of our trip. Paul Bunyon statue stands there proud amongst the little shops around the square just waiting for his photo to be taken. The shop owners are great, especially Gene Martin in the Gunnar Mast Trading Post next door. We made a point of trying to find as many of these 'Muffler Men' on our 5 week trip and were always happy to see them.
This Paul Bunyan Statue is found in Little Atlanta, Ill, on the Rte 66. It's one of the Icons of Rte 66. The Place where he was sold but they decided to save the statue and the Rte 66 Association was contacted. Then it came here. Probably it has been here for about 10 years by now.
The Atlanta Bunyan Statue stands on Route 66 outside the Gunnar Mast Trading Post. This giant, holding a giant hot dog, is another must see on Route 66 and we were pleased to meet the friendly shop owner of the adjacent and quirky Gunnar Mast trading post who, when hearing we were English, asked us to sign his visitor book, explained how much he loves Adele, and gave us a complimentary postcard of his shop and the giant. You meet such lovely friendly people all along Route 66.
