I found this little treasure from an article about an upcoming event. If you want to learn all about the city you live in, Elgin, this is the place to visit. The exhibits are wonderful. And, if you would like to research an historic home or a family that lived in Elgin the historical information that they have accumulated is quite extensive.
Great mid size town museum. Begins with the founding of the town, through it's growth as a city. One exhibit dedicated to the Elgin national Watch Company. Excellent display of watches from the early years through its final days! Great value with only a $3 admission.
Without question, if you want to know about the history of Elgin, Illinois. This a place you MUST visit. Not only do they have very informative displays dealing with the obvious ones you might of (think Elgin watches), they also have displays focusing on a large number of other items from the very vibrant industrial time of this major Fox river town. What many visitors do not know about Elgin is that it once hosted one of the early 20th century's premier auto road races. In addition to their outstanding displays, they have very knowledgeable docents and staff who can answer many of the questions you might have regarding Elgin's history. But, this museum is not merely a repository for Elgin items. They also have well attended monthly programs which focus upon a variety of topics related to Elgin and also sponsor educational outreach programs. A small gift shop is also staffed where Elgin related publications and gifts may be purchased. Many of their displays are changed yearly, so if you haven't visited in awhile, this museum is certainly worth revisiting. They are open Wednesdays-Saturdays from noon-4:00 PM and should not be missed if you visit the Elgin area.
Went here to look at some of the exhibits they had of old Elgin, the Elgin Watch Company and also the old International Auto Races they had in Elgin prior to World War I. Worth walking through
Even if it wasn't my hometown I was amazed by the displays.....always interesting and well done. My only regret is their limited space. Theydeserve it for all the things that cannot be displayed on a more permanent basis.
