I've visited this site several times since childhood. It's a wonderful quiet spot with an awesome view. I love historical sites and this is one of my favorites.
Visited the site, found it interesting, and as advertised. Would be a great place to picnic and relax.
The view from the bluff shows the Mississippi River down below. However the viewer is not looking at Missouri directly across the river. It is still the state of Illinois. Years ago a flood change the course of the Mississippi River to its current condition. The land across from the Fort was located in Illinois before the flood. After the flood changed the course of the river, Missouri claimed it was now part of Missouri since the Mississippi River was what separated the two states. The court decided that the original boundaries will remain, therefore a person can cross the Mississippi River from Illinois and still be in the state of Illinois at the Fort Kaskaskia point.
The earth works 1700's fort leads you back to the early history of Illinois country when the French, British were fighting for this fertile land. The view from the bluff shows the Mississippi River and the Missouri side and can be enjoyed from picnic sites. The Pierre Menard Home is close by and worth a visit as well. Camping is available too.
