We drove to Tower Rock, and it was much farther and more secluded than we thought it would be from the map, but was worth the drive. It is a large towering rock with trees growing on top of it, and after viewing it from the parking area, we walked up a very steep trail to view it from above.
Tower Rock is a large rock that rises out of the water about 20 yards off the bank of the Missouri side of the Mississippi River. When the river is in its lowest stages, it's possible to walk out to the rock and climb it, which is pretty cool, but when the river is up, it's just a pretty cool rock to look at. There's not a lot of parking, and it's kind of remote, and the roads to get to the rock are gravel and windy.
Very interesting place! Be careful if you are going to climb, you might want to take some rope with you.
A trip to Tower Rock is always a treat. I have been there many times, it is absolutely out of the way, and that is part of the fun. Traveling there takes a person though many towns in East Perry County that quaint and seem to be from another era. Tower Rock itself is magnificent and definitely something to everyone should see at least once. It was good enough for Lewis and Clark, and it is more than good enough for me.
Really, one look and you're done. If you are passing by stop, it won't take long. Don't go out of your way.
