If you are visiting Quincy, Illinois take an hour to visit Villa Katherine. It is a unique chance to visit a piece of history and culture with exceptional panoramic views of the Mississippi River. The home was built by a weathly eccentric after his extensive travels in the Near East in the late 1800's. The self-guided tour can be completed in as few as ten minutes. If you take time to enjoy the different perspectives of the river from the various vantage points of the house, you may want to spend more time exploring the house and property. Exploring the design and construction of the home also makes this visit worth your time.
Enjoyed walking through this museum/visitor center. $4 seemed a little much to pay for short tour, but glad we went through house.
Who would think one would find a Moorish-style home in Quincy, Illinois from the 1800's? Come here and find out about the history of this house and then go on a driving tour of more than 3000 historic houses and places in Quincy! Who'd a thunk!
You can take the self guided tour, but we held a Rehearsal Dinner here for 100 guests or so. We arranged for a tent to overlook the Mississippi River and had plenty of room for the kids to play while the adults caught up. Make sure to ask them to turn on the whirlpool in the ceramic basin inside the Villa. History and elegance all rolled into one. The staff could not be more accommodating to event planners, so say hello to Donna for us.
The Villa Katherine serves as Quincy's Tourist Information center. It stands out amounst the other buildings and homes in Quincy. If you are interested in architecture, the Villa Katherine is worth the time. I believe you can take a tour of the building for a small fee.
Never seen Moorish architecture before this. Was definitely worth the walk-through. It also stands right on the Mississippi. You can see it coming over the bridge from Missouri and it looks pretty from there. Now you get inside and it's gorgeous. I guess I would say, and I'm sure some would disagree, that if you only did one tour in Quincy, it would have to be this one.
I didn't know that Quincy had so much history. It was really interesting to learn about the castle and its history with the Quincy area.
The Villa Kathrine is a unique piece of history. I recommend that everyone visit the castle when they travel through Quincy, IL
The Villa Kathrine is a must see when you visit Quincy. It is a beautiful example of Moorish architecture. The view of the Mississippi River is also great! Take the time to stop by & see it. You wont be disappointed.
After 60+ years visiting relatives in Quincy we finally stopped and looked around the Villa Kathrine, a great old home overlooking the Mississippi from the highest bluffs in the area.Although showing it's age, it is apparent that there is a cadre of interested folks who want to preserve this old mansion built for love unrequited. It is definitely worth the trip, and visiting the museum.
The Villa Katherine is the Tourists Information hot spot for points of interests in and around Quincy. The Villa Katherine is a very unique building, originally a residence for an eccentric who had a taste for mid-Eastern architecture. Self guided tours are available for a small fee.The Villa Katherine is situated on a bluff which overlooks the Mississippi River and provides a nice view towards Missouri.
Excellent tour of a total restored mansion. Unique in its value. I definite must see in Quincy. Also serves as a visitor center
The mansion was a place that the first time I visited it fifteen years ago was devoid of personalty. In the time since then they have filled the rooms with furniture and are trying to bring back part of the home to the house. I enjoyed it as did my family that was with me.
Accurate transplant of form the central area of the Ottoman Empire 1299-1922. It is not to much to say that the collection on display is yet representative of the stylistic cultural acheivements. I suggest you prepare for the visit by searching YouTube for the collection of turn of the century oils shown to the A.W.Ketelbey music "In A Persian Market" or use it as a place to finish digesting the Goodman book "Lords of the Horizons". This house is very nicely maintained and much improved by electricity and plumbing. It may not be open to the public forever, so don't put off until any later to drink in this perfect transplant from the Middle East. The gift shop has priceless bookmarks for inconsiderable money, purses of detail and durability for a bit more. While you cannot purchase a magic carpet, you shouldn't leave without a bookmark!$3 admission...permanent memories. Sit down. Stairs.
This former home, designed to be a Midwestern copy of Mediterranean-style architecture in 1900, is a unique treasure and a fun place to start your tour of the City of Quincy, Adams County or the Great River Road. Located just four-tenths of a mile from Highway 24 East, the property can be found by turning south on 3rd Street as you reach the crest of the hill after crossing the Mississippi. Volunteers like Nancy will greet you in the well-stocked gift shop and will be happy to arrange a tour of the "castle" for a nominal fee, or just set you up with suggestions for where the best historic homes, antiques or tractor museums may be found. I asked about spots for viewing the eagles that gather along the Mississippi at this time of the year. Nancy directed us to Lock 21 where we saw several magnificent eagles and many other birds!
