This is an interesting place for history buffs and locals alike. The Wood River Refinery Museum has countless artifacts and does a great job of explaining the history of Roxana, and Wood River. They showed us a movie on how the town started and then walked us around the museum giving us details and answering questions. This museum is run by retirees who volunteer their time. It was an hour well spend and I highly recommend seeing it. There was no admission charge as the facility is sponsored by Shell Oil Company and its current owner Phillips 66. It's a little piece of "Americana"!
We picked up a brochure for this little museum while at the nearby Lewis & Clark State Historic Site and figured we might as well check it out while in the area. It is a small but interesting museum with exhibits, photos and memorabilia from the oil industry. The staff were all very friendly, giving our boys little souvenirs and even allowing us to sit in the race car to take photos. They do offer a short video and have a gift shop onsite as well. Admission is FREE, but they are only open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am-4pm. Special tours are available by appointment. If you are in the area and have a half hour to spare it is worth taking a look at.
