We wanted to visit the country side after a week of holiday spent in down-town Chicago. The place was easily found and absolutely worth visiting. Even do the farm was closed because of a dinner party in the evening, we received a guided tour from Catherine that was really worth our trip. Excellent explanation and we really enjoyed our walk true the rest of the nature behind the farm (around 45 minutes to walk the big circle). Also worth visiting without kids :-)
We spent the afternoon at the Volkening Heritage Farm. We saw all the animals, watched a volunteer feed an 8 wk old calf in arms reach, toured the barn and other buildings and hiked (very easy hiking) trails. It really is a beautiful (and huge) park for being right in the muddle of suburban Schaumburg. Our kids ages 9, 12, 14 had a great time. We spent about 2 hours here. You could easily spend more (or less) AND it's free!
This place was a enjoyable morning/afternoon with my 2 year old. We are visiting from out of state and needed something to do. Thankfully, the weather was beautiful and my son was able to run around and use up some energy and see a few things along the way. Specifically, he liked the ducks at the pond, seeing the cows eating inside just before milking, watching squirrels on the trail, seeing the chickens and playing in the play area in the gift shop area. I loved getting exercise and the beautiful paths and surroundings. There are so many little wooded trails and little bridges all over the property, as well as memorial benches to sit and have a snack on. We plan to come back and bring lunch another day to the designated picnic area right off the Schaumberg Road parking area!Grateful for TripAdvisor (and it's reviewers) to have found this little gem :)
This guided tour was awesome! We visited the log cabin and made homemade butter, applesauce and cornbread in a cast iron skillet. Don't forget to purchase the maple syrup, yummy.
We love the farm with the grandkids and the people are so friendly and helpful - they are farmer like but really like kids
We wanted to get out of our hotel for a while, so we this nature preserve was a great way to get the toddler energies out!Unfortunately mapquest gave us wrong directions and we ended up in a little condo area. However fortunately, after calling the nice lady at the nature center, we were able to get there without any further problems. It was a beautiful day; the parking lot looked newly paved and we were able to get a spot pretty close to the entrance. There is a small visitors center where you can pick up a trail map, look at turtles, library and a pick up a gift if you so desire. There is a nice kids garden with flowers and veggies. We got on the trail and walked the loop which is a total of .75 miles. There is a heritage farm, large pond, wildflowers, and log cabin. There is also a picnic area if you want to bring a lunch. It was very quiet there, you wouldn't know if was in the middle of Schaumburg. Highly recommend it if you're in the area and looking for a nice hike. Great for families too.
Spring Valley is a great nature sanctuary. The grounds are peaceful and beautiful. However, take a walk through the farm house or education center. We found that to be really cool, too. Definitely worth checking out and the price is right.
We are so lucky to live near this place, its awesome... wonderful break from the hustle and bustle. Its free and wonderful to go on a walk with children!!!
Many paths, a working farm, and nature areas to enjoy. Kids and adult classes are available. It is tucked away and you feel like you are in the country. Many times during the year, they have special days that draw many people. It is educational and fun.
This treasure is part of the Schaumburg Park District offerings, that you can easily miss, due to its low profile and location. Tucked away near the municipal building, there are paths, a working farm, farm buildings and cottages and a treasure trove of plantings, trees and nature areas. Take a few hours from your busy schedule to walk the paths and enjoy the fresh air and the birds and wildlife. It is surprising how quickly you forget that you are actually in the middle of a busy town! There are maps available and the paths are well marked. Bring a water bottle because there are very few places for water once you embark on the trails.
We were in town for a wedding, and were looking for something to do in the morning. We found Spring Valley on Tripadvisor, and it didn't disappoint. Beautiful scenery, nature, history, and made walking fun. You can spend a few minutes to an entire day here. We would come here often if we lived in the area.
Over 100 acres of restored prairie, wetlands, heritage growth and Volkening Farm, a recreation of a working farm await you as you meander three different paths. The longest path is only .75 miles, so combine them to take it all in. The nature center has activities for all ages and in winter, old fashioned snowshoes, to traverse the paths. Scenic viewing areas, benches and boardwalks make a top-notch experience. Spend a couple of hours here or takeaway brief respite.
This place is a nice break from the hectic life outside. You feel you are in a special place and you are. We went in the early evening when the buildings were closed. That didn't matter because we mainly wanted to have a walk. The vegetation is taller than people but you don't feel claustrophobic because the walkways are wide.
Great place to take a walk, relax and rest. Fortunatley for me just minutes from home. Saw couples with small children or babies taking family pictures there and also "expecting" couples having a photo session there. Highly recommended for those who are nature photography enthusiasts. Important tip! Please note that in the evening insects are all over the place.
I grew up in Schaumburg going to summer camps here. I cherish all the time spent on the trails. This nature area is run by the Schaumburg Park District. They do a great job offering classes and activities. The trails are open all year round during the day. I enjoy walking here during all 4 seasons. The farm is great as well and I highly recommend this place to all ages - singles and families. Get some fresh air and enjoy some local prairie, forest, and farm!
