I enjoyed this tour more than my husband. The house was just a normal house, but it was interesting to learn about Vachel Lindsay as well as his father who was a physician with an office in the house where he was one of very few doctors who treated African Americans or other poor people of the time. Vachel was an interesting man, but the house had little to do with his greatness.
Vachel Lindsay's house is also the same house that Abraham Lincoln's sister lived in first. Well preserved. I saw a top hat sitting on the night stand next the Mr. Lindsay's bed. You could tell that this hat was very old and had Mr. Lindsay's name on the inside. Our guide explained how the Lindsay's built an addition to the original house. Interesting history. Actually right next door the Governor's (Executive) Mansion.
Learned a lot about Vachel Lindsay's career and family. Home is well taken care of; lots of nice touches designed by his mother and preserved for today's visitors. Tour guide was friendly and informative.
This home was so interesting not only in itself but the family who owned it. It's immaculately kept up!! The guide, Jennie, was a brilliant woman who took a personal interest in making sure all our questions were answered and then some!
Just down the street from the Governor's mansion and the Frank Lloyd Wright house. We're from Spokane, Wa. where Vachel spent some time living in our historical hotel and met his wife. So we HAD to check this out
Well maintained residence of the poet, novelist, and writer of the first book about film. The owner before Lindsay was Mary Todd's sister, so the house also has a Lincoln connection. It takes no more than a half-hour to tour.
A good place to see another aspect of life during Lincoln's time. Many interesting facts and artifacts about the family.
The outside of the house was lovely, with a beautiful, blooming Linden tree in the front yard. The house itself was beautifully restored, but there was not much furniture on the first floor. I can understand that the correct period pieces are expensive to acquire. So that was fine. But the person giving the tour would not stay on the subject of Vachel Lindsay and the house. After about an hour, we just gave up and said we had to be going. We were disappointed since we love old houses and wanted to learn more about Vachel Lindsay.
Only had a day in this city and spent more than half of it in this house talking with the highly knowledgeable docent. No better way to appreciate an author than to experience the surroundings that influenced him!
If you are "into" Vachel Lindsay this is the place to go, otherwise it is a nice home tour. The home is period and that makes it worth seeing, but it isn't really "exciting". The docents are great! They hold other events there, art shows, photo shows, and that makes it worth going!
This house will interest anyone who likes mid-western poetry in general. It is a modest house in the city.
My family and I really had not heard of Vachel Lindsay before touring his family home. We found out that he was a poet and a writer with very interesting taste in art for his era. Few items had actually been owned by the Lindsay family. Most of the items in the home had been purchased by the family that owned the home afterward.
My friend and I took our Girl Scout troop here while we waited for the Executive Mansion to open. Thank you to the gardener from the Executive Mansion as we learned new things and found a hidden treasure. The house is locked, however a simple ring on the doorbell gains you admittance. The woodwork and furnishings are beautiful and well kept. The docent is well informed and provided us with knowledge we did not have prior. This is recommended for all that want to find the hidden gems!
Building well preserved. The tour guide was well informed on Vachel, his family, and literature.
Sometimes I feel that we go so far to see some intresting places when we have some many right here in Illinois. One of these wonderful sights to see is the Vachel Lindsay Home in the historical part of Springfield IL. This man was a very religious man in his day and a renoun poet of his time. The lovely victorian home is filled with wonderful antiques of the time and there was one thing I thought that was really neat was the portraits and the light feeling of the pink bedroom on the second floor. That turned out to be the room of two of their daughters .The lady that was our guide was very good, and you knew she really loved this home and felt protective of it. She had so much to tell, but we were on a parking meter and could not spend as much time as we would have liked. I hope to go back again and have more time to talk with her. I hope if you visit Springfield you will experience this lovely home of a great American poet.
