Always humbled to see all the fallen soldiers. May they rest in peace... Robert Dean Smith, Brian Osmun, Carlo Santini.. You are forever in our hearts.
Location -This Cemetery is located off of Interstate 55 at marker 100 and head east. Stay in your right lane and you will see signsfor Camp Butler. There is a history of Camp Butler, which is a Civil War site. A grave locator is available if you are looking up someone.
The cemetery has so much history. It is well cared for. My father, father in law and mother in law are buried there. During the holidays, Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Fathers/Mothers Day, when we decorate their graves, we take additional grave decorations and put them on the unknown soldiers graves.
Quiet, serene. Wonderful tribute to our military through the years. There is a civil war section of the cemetery that is very interesting. Often there are military funerals happening where you can see the burial detail paying their respect.
Very beautiful cemetery...looks like a mini Arlington National Cemetery in DC. While in Springfield on business, I had to visit since I've seen Arlington. It was a beautiful fall day, the grounds were immaculate, and the fall colors were gorgeous. The cemetery wasn't crowded and it was like I was there by myself with my thoughts of all these heroes that granted me my freedoms. Really don't have much to say, but everyone should see this and experience it first hand. It's beautiful and moving and if you are not touched by it, there is something wrong.
My husband has chosen Camp Butler as our final resting place. We stopped by to visit a deceased acquaintance's grave and were impressed by the tranquility. Having never been to this person's grave, it was very helpful to find the computerized grave finder. Showing where he was buried. There have been improvements made since our last visit. One of the reasons my husband suggested this cemetery is the location. Our families are within traveling distance. The interstate is very close so which ever way they are traveling we are not far away, There is history associated with Camp Butler from the Civil War. Nice for history buffs plus those who walk cemeteries.
Missed this my first time through the area and it has haunted me for years. This time I made my husband wait out a thunderstorm for over an hour so I could see Camp Butler and it was well worth it. The grounds are beautiful and humbling. So quite and truly a historical gem. The staff are friendly and helpful. From Civil war to present day military rest here. It as full of history as it is beautiful.
We were very well cared for at Camp Butler. We had shelter to have our service and Toni stood by to care for our any need. We were able to visit the gravesite after her urn was placed in the ground. The whole cemetery is neat and tidy.
Very impressive soldiers and families only starting with soldiers from both sides of the Civil War. If you have never seen a Veterans cemetery it is quite sobering and stately. Very well kept. We took a driving tour since we had 2 people who couldn't walk well. Very good for every American--we all need to be reminded.
We visited at friends grave and what a beautifully taken care of cemetery. It was so amazing to see row after row of white stones and how well manicured the landscape was. It was nice they had a place you could enter a persons name and find their grave stone.
Buried my mother with my father and sister 4 years ago ! To this date not one blade of grass grows in the area where they are buried, The ground is hard and has deep cracks in the ground, When my sister passed away we bought a brass vase that is placed at the grave and is anchored at the grave site, The Vase was destroyed when my father was buried next to my sister, Staff was made aware and was replaced. When my mother was buried there 4 years ago, the 2nd vase was destroyed and to this day has not been replaced!! My parents were involved in several veterans groups and spent both Memorial and Veterans Day at Camp Butler, Mother organized the avenue of flags. As a child was instructed this is where they wanted to be buried it WAS such a beautiful place. It saddens me to see what has become of Camp Butler National Cematary
Spent about an hour walking around the cemetery looking at different areas of it. There was a new wall it place in a newer area of the cemetery, we weren't sure what it was for.
As you drive slowly through the Cemetery seeing all of the perfectly lined headstones, you feel both sadness at the loss and pride in the accomplishments of these fine Americans.
The white markers all perfectly lined up are reminiscent of Arlington. This cemetery serves all veterans and their families. It's a beautiful place.
I love seeing the old cemeteries while on vacation. We stopped here and it reminded me a lot of Arlington. So sad yet so breathtakingly beautiful.
