I was in Springfield to attend a committee meeting of the legislature. The building is beautiful and fascinating to walk through. The artwork is unbelievable and each turn brings you to something different. There are elevators to help get you around, though there should be some more restrooms. Be sure to take your time and look at the rotunda.
This was a surprisingly interesting tour of this historic building. We went early in the morning and had our own private tour guide - it helped it was out of season. We were shown all around the building and were given access to the Senate & House rooms. Would definitely recommend if you're in the area.
It's nice to see the Old State Capitol after visiting the Lincoln home. It provides a great backdrop to understand Lincoln from his earlier years.
This was our first time seeing the Capitol building. We felt like we were on a private tour. The people giving the tour were gracious and knowledgeable about a variety of topics. My husband is a history buff and he had all of his questions answered completely. I loved seeing all of the decorations on the walls. We really loved this tour. I am sure the citizens of Illinois are quite proud of their state Capitol. My husband and would love to come back and take another tour.
We were happy the Capitol was open on Sunday. There was a tour guide which took us up to the floors & showed us the Senate & House rooms. She was very knowledgeable & friendly. Would recommend taking the tour & learning about our Illinois history.
A very beautiful and ornate capitol building. It is full of history, statues, marble, paintings, portraits, sculptures, and scandals. Take a guided tour and find out interesting facts such as which governors are in prison and why one has a portrait and the other doesn't. Be sure to sit in the gallery of the senate or house when they are in session and listen as bills are hotly being debated. Walk outside around the entire capital and see the fountains, monuments, and a giant statue of Abe Lincoln. Look up at the dome ceiling and the beautiful artwork. Carry a sign or wear a shirt and protest your favorite cause. If you are not into protests and noise (it gets very loud in the rotunda during session) you should visit when the legislators not in session.
Absolutely gorgeous and intricate, inside and out. I've now photographed 49 state capitals (haven't been to Hawaii) and I believe this is the most beautiful. Don't just see the outside, be certain to go inside and see every room they'll let you in.
The Illinois State Capitol is a must-see. It is extremely ornate with magnificent inlaid marble, incredible ironwork and stunning paneling. Built in 1877, this beautiful building is filled with intricate craftsmanship.
While not a historic building - all the Lincoln history took place in the old State Capitol, and President Obama seemed to vote "present" here and nothing else - this is one impressive State Capitol. The building was built at the height of the Victorian age and the state of Illinois is doing a fantastic job to restore it. You can state at the interiors of the dome which is full of stained glass windows for hours. The guides are well informed.
went here to be in the room that Lincoln was layed in state in, and found out that the building had been taken down, and completely redone. The only truly original pieces were the shell of the building. Interior looks similar to back then with the same arrangement, but the carpets are poor quality repro's, and rooms are simply not the same as the original. Great volunteer staff though..very knowledgable
Take a minute to step inside the Illinois State Capitol building. There are guided tours available, or just wander around looking at the beautiful staircases, murals, and lovely architecture. Look up at the amazing rotunda and marvel at its variety of colors and shapes. Some of the rooms, such as the Old Supreme Court, are open to the public. Stay for an hour or a day. Whether or not you are an Illinois native, you will enjoy this gorgeous building.
What a beautiful building with such grandeur. We went in by chance, but this has got to be a must see for visitors. The tours of the building go regularly and the guides are a font of information. You can park free outside on the driveway on non sitting days. The paintings, glass work and guilded decorations are superb. This is truly a top spot to visit.
This is the prettiest capitol building outside of DCThis is the prettiest capitol building outside of DCThis is the prettiest capitol building outside of DC!!!!!!!
Went on a Sunday morning, not busy at all, Mrs & I were the only folks during our tour time. Tours last about 25 mins. Worthwhile to go on a tour as you have access to many more areas than if just self guided.
Absolutely loved our tour and the building is outstandingly beautiful! We were very impressed by this outstanding capitol and we could see why they are so proud of it.
