If you like archaeology, this is an interesting little museum. Be sure to walk the U of Chicago campus a bit and see the Robie House (one of Frank Lloyd Wright's best).
The name "Oriental Institute Museum" may be misleading if you think of the Orient as Japan, China or Korea. The museum focuses on Ancient Mesopotamia, Assyria, Anatolia, Megiddo, Egypt, Persia and Nubia (present day Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Israel, Iran, Egypt and Sudan). This is not a problem as long as it is what one is interested in seeing.Displays are informative and attractive. The galleries are arranged around a square courtyard, making it easy for the visitor to move through them systematically and logically. Unfortunately, several of the computer displays were out of order, and I noted at least two places with burned-out light bulbs which impacted viewing of the displays. We spent about 1-1/2 hours visiting the museum, reading some of the signs but not all. There are some impressive artifacts including a 40-ton sculpture of a human-headed winged bull, a large King Tut statue and several mummies. I found the displays about the development of writing to be very interesting. For visitors with children, the museum has provided laminated cards in many of the galleries to highlight key displays in the room. These cards are in both Spanish and English. This museum is located in the Hyde Park area of the city, within the campus of the University of Chicago. For visitors to our city, that means that it's not downtown in the "Loop"; by public transit, it will take 48 minutes - to an hour to get there from the Loop.Though this is a great museum, I would suggest that visitors to the city would probably want to see some of our other great museums first before seeing this specialized museum, unless these geographic areas and time period are of particular interest. There is no entrance fee though a donation is suggested. We did not feel pressured to donate but were thanked when we did. If you come by car, there is a parking garage a couple of blocks away. On the museum's website, it says the garage is free, but as of July 2014, there is a fee to park there. However, it is still convenient and pretty inexpensive for Chicago.
This museum displays objects collected through University of Chicago archeological expeditions mostly in the middle east. It is a splendid collection in terms of the quality and beauty of the objects on display, but even more for the informative detail of its extensive labeling, a museum that clearly aims to share knowledge, to teach both about these places and about archeological practice.
This little museum is worth a trip to Hyde Park. Intimate, informative and home of very substantial archeological works.mhighly recommended
Beautiful collections from Asian and Middle East, even when the place is small is rich in artifacts and documents.
I visit this Museum on the average of once every two years. Ever since I was a child, I have been interested in the ancient world. The artifacts here can be viewed in a less than two hours. I really dislike nothing about this place.
Right on the campus of the University of Chicago this is a real gem.wonderful Oriental pieces and these are not fake. These are the genuine pieces from the ancient world. I still cannot believe how they assembled this collection as some of the pieces are just huge.
Every year for 5 years we've visited the Oriental Mu,seum. Every year he gets something different from it.The standard exhibits - King Tut, Lhamassu, the mummies and grave offerings - are so well displayed. The quiet of the place enables real conversation about the themes with a child. The interactive computer displays and games are educational. And the books available from the shop allow you to continue the experiences later in the day.
My two kids attended a 3 hour class. Was great learning experience fir myself! A must see when when at the university of Chicago campus.
What a treat! A local recommended this place, and we had a great time. The museum wasn't crowded. We had a leisurely visit, and we could get as close as we wanted to each of the exhibits. Easy parking, or an easy walk from the train station.
Loved this museum. Wish we had more time as we were only able to make it through about a third of it before our schedule dictated we leave. We will definitely be returning in the not too distant future. Well worth your while.
Whether or not you make the special exhibit--and seeing it is worth the effort of getting down to Hyde Park (plenty of on street parking) and the museum is FREE--the museum has an amazing selection of mind-blowing artifacts from Mesopotamia with plaques describing the importance of what you see and wonderful videos of what has long be obliterated by time and history. Get the audio tour. We didn't but it's a must for our next visit. (And no, you can't visit the whole museum in a day. It would mean going back to the Babylon of Nebuchadnezzar's day for a 45 minute tour.
