heritage museum

We had some time to kill before playing at the World Woods golf course in Brooksville, FL and decided to tour the Heritage Museum in Brooksville. The tour guides (docents) made the tour! Ronnie and Sharon took us through the house which was built by two different individuals in the 1800s. They were extremely knowledgeable, both in terms of the original owners of the house and in terms of all the additional artifacts that have been donated to them for display in the house. The tour was rich in history and information and came alive through the tour guides.

Well the title tells you what I think. The staff is great, very clean nice place. Lovely scenery. Just an all round great place for history lovers.

I visited with my daughters, ages 4, 7 & 9. They LOVED it and we all learned so much. Fee is nominal and the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and in costume which made is so real and fun.

Well worth a visit! This museum is one of those hidden gems which pre-trip advisor would only have been promoted by word of mouth and would have been missed by many people. It receives no grants or public funding and is entirely maintained through the efforts of volunteers and donations so does not spend much (if anything) on marketing The house itself just oozes history - four rooms are pre civil war, the rest of it is later. It is packed with donations from hernando residents . Rooms are themed - and the guided tour brings much of it to life - either by re telling the story of the families that lived there (and the resident 3 year old ghost) or by demonstrating pieces of equipment - eg in the telephone room my teenagers had never seen a phone with a dial on it before - whereas I was amazed by the phone exchange The cost is very reasonable - just $5 a person. That includes the tour led by a well informed volunteer. The house is open 12-3 Tuesday - Saturday I believe and is shut all August This is a local gem - it's close to the site of the now closed rogers Christmas house. I imagine that a lot of people have driven by it - please learn from the Christmas house experience - visit it and don't risk losing it My only complaint is that they don't yet have a clear view of what the house is and isn't and currently accept any donation of artefacts. Be more confident - have a clear vision and don't be afraid to say no. What place have Mayan artefacts in a house that should be primarily about the history of brooksville, hernando country and Florida (in that order) . The sign of a mature museum us to have that confidence .

This beautiful house that is the home of Hernando Historic Museum Association offers a glimpse back into time. Built in 1856 and is on the National Register of Historic Homes and houses the May-Stringer Museum with over 11,000 artifacts for viewing. While there you may encounter the resident ghost, if not there are official ghost tours available by reservation on Friday and Sat nights. You can walk through the museum on your own or take a guided tour by the knowledgeable docents who can fill you in on all the mysteries of the house and its treasures. The museum is also the home of several community events throughout the year. It is nestled under large spreading oaks with rocking chairs on the porch. It is worth the trip if you like old houses and history. The museum is open Tuesday-Sat, Noon-3pm, Nominal admission. There is also a great place for lunch across the street.

I visited with my cousin who lives nearby and really enjoyed seeing this home. It is so beautifully and authentically decorated. One room is more interesting than the next but the visit would not have been as interested without the awesome docents giving the tour. They were so knowledgeable and personable. It was obvious that they love this home and very much enjoy the tours they give. Don't miss the memorial garden behind the house. Also if you are at all interested in ghosts/paranormal activities, this is the place for you to visit. Ghost Hunters has been here and had some interesting results. Do not miss this lovely home ! This is a nice hometown attraction ran by great volunteers who love what they do. It is a great way to learn about the history of Brooksville and realize that there were many generations here before you. There are some nice displays of a school room, doctors office, etc. All of the pieces in the museum have been donated and most have been from local residents. At Christmas and Halloween they really go all out to make the place fantastic. It is a great place to support and a fun hour or so to spend. Really great if you love history.

The house is beautiful and the tour guides very knowledgable . The house is well kept and going up all the levels into the attic was really cool. If you love florida history this is a must see. Also brooksville has the train depot museum. Very awesome too.

I just visited the museum at night. What a wonderful experience going at night. Each room was decorated with Christmas lights and candles. A guide was dressed for the time period of the house and spoke about the construction of the house, the people that lived there and died there. Yes, they have a couple ghost. After going on the tour of the beautiful home we were offered hot chocolate and cookies and a beautiful Christmas ornament for the tree. The outside grounds were beautiful. They also decorate the museum as a haunted house in October.

The museum is charming and has a lot to offer southern history buffs. If you like ghost stories..........it has something for you too. A must see if you come through Brooksville.

Lovely house full of history and well worth a visit.The volunteer guides were both very good and knowledgeable.

I have visited the Heritage Museum several time. Brooksville still had a switch borad operator in the early 70's. Going there is like stepping back in time. Several things at the museum were the same things my Grandmother used in her kitchen. In the 70;s. My Grandmother still used a May Tag ringer washing machine. She bought second hand in 1921. She said why buy a new one if this one still works. It is a great way of teaching children about the past.

This house has been open as a museum for decades and is stocked full of things I remember from around Brooksville. The vintage dress that the staff wear on special occasions makes it even more appealing. Perhaps there are places with more museum items, but this holds a special place to Brooksville residents...

Many great events throughout the year with volunteer staff dressed in "period" attire. Even has Ghost tours, great stories.

Seems to rest on the laurels of having live-in ghosts. There should be much more here.
