I was going to order earth boxes, but then I learned about the Earthbox Research Center in Ellenton. You can get everything you need, the staff is very helpful, and twice a week they have a class that is very informative. You can also be inspired by everything they grow in earth boxes.
My goodness! What a surprise this little complex was! My mother (81yrs) and myself drove to the Earthbox Research Center to attend the "class". VERY INFORMATIVE. I never knew you could grow so much in a little box (earthbox)! The instructor did a hands on training session planting flowers since it was May and the vegetable season pretty much done for Florida. The instructor was a tomato farmer and he himself owning some 8000 earthboxes. One earthbox can produce 30-50lbs of tomatoes. The grounds had so many vegetables growing and they even let me fill a bag of vegetables for $5. The vegetables were massive in growth and no bugs anywhere. I could go on and on about my visit here. I truly enjoyed the experience and so will you. I think children 8+ years old would also find this fascinating. I can not wait till next fall to try growing my vegetables in the earthboxes vs the ground. I hope everyone finds this short review helpful. I give this a true thumbs up. Plenty of room to park and they sell everything you need to start a earthbox in all sizes. If you google the Earthbox Research Center, you get a website out of PA that "ships" their inventory, but the actual Center is in Ellenton, FL.
I haven't been able to find lavender anywhere, and they had 3 different varieties. Their staff is very knowledgable and helpful. I was able to get all the veggies I needed to start my own home garden.
Sure, they sell these things all over the world but this is a home-grown Ellenton business that makes us proud! Next time you are visiting, skip the gaudy-never-wear-it-again bathing suit wrap from the outlet mall and take home a real souvenir... an Earthbox! Veggies? check. Herb garden? check. Flowers? check. If it grows, it will grow bigger, better, and more beautiful in an Earthbox. You can plant on your own or for a small fee they'll even plant it for you. Loads of plants on site from seedlings to gigantic, science-fiction sized veggies! They hold free planing classes every Saturday at 10am. Bring your own folding chair and a drink. Closed during July. When visiting, ask for Sergio. He's the bomb!
